Tacoma Getting Mapped - Street View ( 7. November 2007, 12:14 by Derek) ~ A Little Something

I walked out the door of Suite133 this morning to see the Windows Live Local mega-mapping roof-full-of-cameras Facet Technologies (with Minnesota plates) SUV cruising down Pacific Avenue. It looked a lot like this one seen in Sacramento a few months ago.

We’re being mapped. Someday, we’ll be able to check out the streets of Tacoma from the comfort of our living rooms (hotel room for those visiting)… and as you pass Suite133, you’ll see how badly I need a hair cut.

I saw that SUV two days ago driving thru my neighborhood (Sixth Ave and Alder St area) and wondered what it was. They’re video taping every street for a virtual map?
Very interesting job.
I wonder how much footage time it takes to make a virtual city map.

And how much gas!?

The mapping technology is cool, but that is absolutely one of the most thoughtless user interfaces I’ve seen in a while. Why am I in a car? Why are the streets on a 45 degree angle when the mouse can only operate the car on the perpendicular x or y axis? When I switch to walk view, why do I walk in the middle of the street?

Sparkrobot,
“Street View” is what google calls it where is “walk view”?

From the select menu in the middle of the page, “Pick your view:”. It changes the state of the map, none of it RESTful however. If you return to the map, they put you back in that stupid race car.
