On the Market: Apex Penthouses (28. November 2007, 14:57 by Erik) ~ Walk to Nordy's?
So maybe you want a condo, but not one in downtown Tacoma.
Apex Apartments and Penthouses is one of the few projects outside the downtown core that has the 10 year property tax abatement.
This large project features both condos (AKA Penthouses) and apartments. The 32 condos start at $180,000 and go up to $380,000 with sizes ranging from 600 to 1,400 square feet. Some features of the project are loft style layouts, including some condos with 18-foot high ceilings, views of the Cascades and the Olympics (and, we assume, the Mall).
Move in starts in early 2008, but the condo part of the project was recently listed with Windermere.

They are really doing a nice job with this project. There are alot of nice options outside of the downtown core. Village at the Pointe, north 33rd and Pearl. No stairs, gated, fenced, patio homes, 2bed, 2 baths. They start in the mid 200K range. You want privacy and quiet go there.

I like the 600 SF size; it’s one of the only ways many young couples (or singles) could get a first home. The small home is a concept whose time has come.

I like this project a lot. Because it’s on top of a knoll, the building looks about 100 feet higher than it actually is. If you were driving by on I-5 and forgot you were in a city, the Apex would be a good reminder. I hope there will be more developments like the Apex in coming years as the mall area evolves into a functional neighborhood.
Am I the one person who finds that setup ugly as sin? I can think of no better example in our city of the negative aesthetic of off-street parking requirements than the “Not very tall building stacked on top of huge concrete slab” look that the Apex has got going on.
I think its more of a northwest look that alot of other projects do not have. I am glad to see that they did not go metal or hot mop.

Andrew, yes it’s ugly. But, it’s also density outside of down town, almost affordable and right next to a transit hub and I-5.
And besides isn’t most of what’s being built in Western Washington these days ugly?

Well, let’s see it sits under the flight path to McChord.
It sits on a pretty steep hill that could slide in the next big one.
While the parking garage is concrete the rest of the building is wood frame. Barbeque anyone?
I think I’ll pass.
