Tacoma Map Circa 1887 (24. January 2006, 17:44 by Derek Young) ~

Our house was built in 1888. This map was published in 1887 and gives us a snapshot of Tacoma as it was when pur house was built. When I saw it on eBay for a few bucks, impulse buying kicked in. The map arrived yesterday. It is now scanned and ready for you to investigate. Trolley car fans should appreciate the old trolley routes shown on the map.

Here are a few questions for you:
Can anybody out there find me a photo or additional history on the ‘track’ in the bottom left corner of this image?

I think I have a name for it, but I can’t find any additional info.

When did Warner, Lawrence, and Proctor streets get their names?

You’ll find them on the map as Railroad and Rainier.

Only click the following link if you have a high speed connection or enjoy sitting around for a while. The image width is set at 1500 pixels and it has been optimized to 500k. I could’ve made it smaller, but then you wouldn’t be able to stare at the detail with quite the same level of clarity.
