My friends, if you will love this humble burg,
Will you still recall where we got our beer?
From barley, hops, and malt at Heidelberg—
A Brewery I know some still hold dear.

And now they want to blow it up! It’s time
To say, Hell NO! We’ve lost too much this year:
The Church was razed, the Eagles fell, and I’m
Not hopeful Murray’s Bridge is in the clear.

Why build hotels, then strip away the life
That would inspire anyone to want
To stay? Must this too fall below the knife,
And leave a wound for none but ghosts to haunt?

It’s ugly, I won’t lie. But it’s the last
We’ll have – the rest are departing too fast.

Disclaimer: So it’s not exactly funny, but there’s not much to laugh about. Thanks are due to Erik Hanberg for his sonnet.

“My Uncle”

My Uncle worked in the Brewery bottle shop for decades until he retired.

If you’d seen the cases of Heidelberg stacked in his home garage, you’d have to wonder how he found time to work and not get fired.

You know Heidelberg’s claim to fame was the invention of the stubby bottle. It didn’t make the brew taste any better but it looked cool—-like a fashion accessory for a super-stylin’ model.

So much for glassy style.

‘Cause when you get down to it, the Brewery shut down.
