New Year's Treat for Port of Tacoma (27. December 2007, 16:10 by Erik) ~ More boats in the Bay

The Port of Tacoma has snagged another shipping company from Seattle, the second this year.

According to the PI Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd (MOL), which accounts for about half of the traffic through Terminal 5 in Seattle, will be moving to Tacoma.

“It’s a race to the bottom,” Ugles said, adding that the union’s local work force would continue to grow to accommodate the surging cruise business. “But if Tacoma is going to be that cutthroat, how can we compete with that?”

We hate to point out trends to our friends in Seattle but …

Most of Seattle’s angst, seems to be that they lost to Tacoma.

Of course, it is impossible for them to mention Tacoma without slamming it with the phrase “It’s a race to the bottom.” Tacoma is supposed to represent the “bottom” to Seattle.

See folks. Tacoma can win.

Tacoma has hurt Seattle by taking away some of there business and Tacoma is going to go on… hurting Seattle this way. One day perhaps we will leave them as they left us.

I bet 95% of residents in Seattle don’t really care about the port.

Erik is right on. Seattle would not be nearly as upset if they lost to Vancouver because they envy Vancouver. They like for Tacoma and Pierce County to be “south of Seattle”. I think if most Seattleites could have the option to move all their unsightly industrial activity to Pierce County, but still call it their’s – well then their heads would explode with joy. But as it is now, when things they don’t really like move to Tacoma it looks like they it was not their choice, and they really hate that.

Port of Tacoma is not “undercutting” Seattle.

I assure you that the Seattle longshoreman quoted has absolutely no knowledge of the business relationship between M.O.L. and Washington United Terminals, the port’s custoemr (unless he has a board room seat in Tokyo, and that’s not likely). The old, tired sour-grapes claim about undercutting is and always has been false.

In fact, NYK Line will be paying much more to operate from Tacoma than Seattle when their new Port of Tacoma terminal opens in 2012. What they GAIN here is a much, much more efficient and better managed port – the same thing that M.O.L. will enjoy.

Score another win for Tacoma!

Now, if we could only figure out a way to lure other businesses that will fill up a couple new office buildings, whose employees could possibly fill some vacant condos as well.
