OTM: Ma Chihuly's Home (21. January 2008, 22:34 by Derek Young) ~ A Touch of Glass

We’ve found a home that may interest the artist in you.

The home was built in 1943 in the 4400 block of North 33rd street by Mr. Clarence Beckwith. 4 bedrooms and 1.75 bath with 3650 square feet. That should be enough room for most of you. In 1947 the home was listed as a contender for some garden and yard awards.

Yet… that was sixty years ago. Why should you care about this home now? According to the listing, the home has “Tons of storage cabs for canning.” But that isn’t it. It’s because it’s “Dale’s mom’s house” – the home of Viola Chihuly, the mother of Tacoma’s most famous one-eyed artist.

I know you wanted Yanni’s house just a few years ago. But now it’s time to be a bit more practical. Here’s your chance to own a home with a connection to the arts and our city’s history without breaking the bank… sorta.

You want a piece of Tacoma’s art history. This could be it!

Looks dark and dirty.

Aye. I also think the price is foolish, but not necessarily more so than average these days (for now). On the plus side, the dirty part is easily remedied and I like the fireplace. I was disappointed to see there are no elaborate light fixtures.

Foolish? I don’t think so at all. 3650 sq ft in the North End for $375K seems like you’re actually getting a pretty good price in a pretty good neighborhood.

I guess it all comes down to expectations about the future.

The house looks pretty modest. Some of the sq. ft. might be in a built out basement.

I’d would’ve expected to see some glass ball fishing floats hanging from the front porch—-at the least.

Maybe it comes with a giant eye patch and curly roof cozy for Halloween.

Shouldn’t throw stones in it. Oh, maybe it’s O.K.
