City Council Meeting- Jan. 29, 2008 (29. January 2008, 21:16 by Whitney Rhodes) ~ It's Your Day

Tonight’s meeting was all warm and fuzzy, with recognitions and proclamations all around.

  • February is National Heart Month so a proclamation was issued to recognize this event. The campaign “Go Red” for Women’s Heart Health was in attendance to promote February 1 (Friday) as Wear Red Day. Cardiovascular disease is currently the number one killer of women, and the campaign is devoted to raising awareness about the risks.
  • Recognition was also given to a group of professionals from all over the country who have been working in Tacoma on the Safe Return Initiative. The program works to prevent domestic violence by helping men who have been released from prison safely integrate back into their families and the community.
  • Bill Pugh is retiring after 30+ years of service with the City. In his honor, February 1, 2008, is officially William Pugh Day.
  • Resolution 37388 was passed providing money for engineering on the sidewalks of the Broadway LID. This is separate from the portion of work that went out to bid today.

Is that it? Okay…

So, what are you doing for Bill Pugh Day?

The council took some much more aggressive action earlier today against the felon placement house the state was trying to set up in Tacoma:

The Tacoma City Council wants the state of Washington to rescind a $1.1 million grant awarded to a nonprofit group to house former inmates, citing serious concerns about the group.

Although Walker tried to separate her concerns about Citizens for Responsible Justice from larger issues, other council members linked it to ongoing concerns that Tacoma and Pierce County serve as the state’s dumping ground for ex-cons. A draft letter that Walker brought to the meeting asked only that the state rescind its grant to Citizens for Responsible Justice and give the funds to a “more capable organization.” The council changed that to say it’s the city’s preference that the contract go to an organization outside of Pierce County.

Crime rate is highly correlated with felon placement because of the high recidivism rate. Tacoma will not be able to reduce the crime rate without reducing felony placement here.

No issue is bigger in Tacoma and Pierce County than excessive felony placement here.

The Department of Corrections has placed felons excessively in Pierce County and Tacoma because they could with little resistance, hopefully that is changing now.

Tacoma and Pierce County will handle its own felons but should not feel obligated have the rest of the state’s felons placed in Pierce County where they victimize our neighbors, friends and families.

Here’s the group Life in Pierce County which is taking this issue on.

Just give Prium the contract to build the housing. In the time it takes for them to build the housing, the list of felons waiting to come to our fair city should be so backed up that the DoC will have to send them somewhere else. Problem solved.
