General : Can It Change?
The New Tacoma Neighborhood Council and the Hilltop Action Coalition will be hosting a forum about the Pierce County Jail. The focus of the evening will be the Jail’s strategy to deal with overcrowding and the impact it has on the neighborhood around it. This is an issue that impacts everyone. Panelists will include the Prosecutor, several judges, the Chief of Police, and Sheriff’s department. That should be interesting…

Random daydream: How about if the pulp mill is converted to a jail and the jail is converted to class A office space?

I know I’m going to get absolutely slaughtered for this, but here goes:
They could always, I don’t know, decriminalize pot?

It’s much more practical than my idea … I’m all for it.

Wonder how many potheads are in our jail. I know there are a ridiculous number nationwide, but does our jail have the same, higher, or lower proportion?
Andrew, I could be wrong, but I doubt this particular forum would be too hard on you for suggesting such a thing. You can count me with you!
Funny little story unrelated to pot: I and three fellow UPS students actually had the privilege of spending a night in said jail in 1997. The crime? A 2 a.m. noise violation from a big party we were hosting! Now that I’m an upstanding member of the community, I feel bad for pissing off the neighbors that much (and karma has had its revenge on me with similarly noisy neighbors), but jail? Come on.

Report: More than 1 in every 100 Americans now behind bars
“For the first time in history, more than one in every 100 American adults is in jail or prison, according to a new report tracking the surge in inmate population and urging states to rein in corrections costs with alternative sentencing programs.”

1 in 100 in jail???!!!
How are jails accomplishing this amazing increase in market share?
Must be the great marketing they do via rap lyrics.

Oh Andrew,
If only Tacoma was cool enough to have a jail full of pot heads.
Unfortunately, the problem filling our jails is the Meth. Ugh. Instead of getting mellow you get all scabby.

Accounting Nerd Alert!
Okay, the US censu says that the US population is 303,584,433. The news story say 2,319,258 inmates. That makes the stat .764 folks per 100.
Still, too many people behind bars. Anybody want to rethink the sucess of no child left behind?

Steven – You’re right. In the same article is says “…highest per capita at 750 per 100,000” Huh? that’s not 1 in 100.
Maybe the author is a pot head that should be in jail.

@Sassy:
Oh, certainly we have more methheads than potheads. The libertarian in me says that’s partly a market response to the high cost of other drugs, but that’s an ENTIRELY different conversation.
@NSHDscott:
Jail for a noise disturbance? That seems a little excessive… My senior year at UPS (04-05) we had a house party that got a little loud, and the cops came. They were actually really cool about it, partly cause we felt bad for wasting their time. They just told everyone to get inside the house and turn the music down a little, but everyone still managed to somehow translate that into “Get the hell out.” Shame too, as I have enough trouble getting my mack on WITHOUT police interference.
