Introducing the Tollefson Spire? (14. April 2008, 11:27 by Erik) ~ A modest proposal ...

Dan Voelpel’s Sunday article about Tollefson Plaza got us thinking about what we’d like to add to our favorite triangle of concrete. Something interesting, something with a little character, something that would help it live up to its Special Project Award from the DOT

Lo and behold, eBay has the perfect addition for our humble plaza: The Spindle is on the auction block.

40 feet tall, 8 cars on the spike, featured in the 1992 film Wayne’s World. Who could ask for anything more? Opening bid is $50,000. Estimated shipping costs are $100,000.

Of course, if that seems too expensive, we could just construct the thing ourselves. The Chamber can pay for the spike and the City can donate the cars of Tacoma’s worst chain parking offenders. And we finally get the Spire!

We hope someone can get on this quickly … the auction ends Thursday.

Slightly off topic (only slightly) but was anyone else surprised at the Daffodil Parade that there wasn’t a single food stand in the plaza? A few corporate swag tents and some good community health/organizing stuff, but no food. I mean really, what was the deal with that?

It’s psychological, people don’t feel comfortable eating in alien environments. people are thinking “lets get out of here” and not “lets buy some food”

off topic: whatever happened to the funny friday exit133 posts?

Maybe the Spindle could be between I-5 and the LeMay Museum.

OK, I’ve been thinking…just how DO you ship that sucker? Is there “some assembly required”? If so, count me in.

This would also be a good hedge in case the LeMay project stalls. A gritty alternative to display the collection.

OH YEAHHH…Hey there’s a guy up on 6th Avenue that can make something like that.

Drive to Walt’s Radiator and Muffler and you can see a tower/spindle art thing that was made by the folks from Walt’s.

Also, there’s a guy that has some big metal tower stuff down I-5 around Chehalis or maybe south of it. There’s about 4 or 5 sixty-foot tall art things in a field next to the east side of the highway.

So much art, too few plazas…

I’d love to see this in the open area on the Foss Waterway instead of another block of condo’s. At least you could still see the mountain without having to go on someone’s balcony.
