The Luzon Building, one of our favorite buildings in Tacoma and a Burnham & Root designed piece of architectural history, is on its way to being restored to its former glory. The Gintz Group officially purchased the building several weeks ago. Now, the Commercial MLS is showing several available spaces for lease beginning on 1/1/2009. Must be a good sign of sorts. I have never seen the building listed for lease before. Ever.
Maybe I will leave a message with the Realtor stating that I need to move in next week.
Should someone be protesting one way or another the tree that might be cut down?
Good morning from Gintz Group! Jamie is right, we have renamed the building Burnham and Root Building, and we are planning a ground-breaking ceremony for early summer. Those beautiful trees must go, unfortunately, but not for some time yet. We’ll keep you posted on the progress as we move forward with this awesome new project!

Given the prominence of this blighted building in downtown which is unavoidable, and how good it will look when restored, the Luzon remodel will certainly be a contender for restoration project of the decade.
Let’s see: renovated South Parking Plaza with office space and retail, Luzon building and Hotel Murano. This part of town may be picking up.
If only the Luzon could be renovated totally on the inside and then the outside could remain the same…

About the trees. We are actually going to use the trunk of one of the trees to fashion a picture frame. Inside the picture frame will be a wonderfully presented list of the individuals, companies, organizations and entities that participated in the restoration. I have been commissioned to build the frame (truth be known, I whined until told I could do it). Regarding interior vs exterior, the interior will be completely new and modern space. The facades on Pacific, Commerce and 13th will be restored to original. We hope to preserve the elevator box for use with new “guts” and we will be saving at least one of the historic bank vaults.
I hope everyone comes to the Mecca grand opening May 10. Check out the professionally framed newspapers dating back to September, 1907 hung throughout the common areas. Pretty newsy articles and advertisements and absolutely unique. We are excited about both properties, but our major focus right now is getting Mecca completed.
Erik B. is right. This area is seeing a bit of a renaissance and it is nice to see!

The excitement grows as this “piece of the puzzle” gets it’s EXTREME MAKEOVER” now that the Murano is on the end run for “this and that” final touch’s. The “Beautiful Noise” is getting louder and the Russell decision is forthcoming.The T. Plaza shall begin a “second life” soon, and the ground shall be shaking soon as the LeMay folks dig in those shovels. “Its All Good” in T.Town !

Is it me or can anyone figure out the penthouse…. 2500 sf…. is it a secret floor above the 6th floor with 3 foot celings? Maybe a good fit for the new childrens museum, must be less than 3 feet tall to enter.

These buddleias are on private property. They are destroying the building and are invasive.
Cutting down native trees along Stadium Way is another matter. Public open green spaces are not for us to destroy but for us to protect for the future. Just like Ron Gintz is preserving the Burnham and Root buiding. It is what we do if we care.

I guess the Gintz Group is expecting people to be chomping at the bit to have the leasing start before any work has even been done on the building. Almost a 100k a year in rent. Will people really be lining up right now to sign up for this, in this economic climate? As far as I can tell no one has signed up for the retail in the Mecca and the Mecca is much further along. I’m not quite sure what a poke is but this is looking like a pig in a poke.

Bell Capt. doesn’t smoke- He does however have a love affair with this City called Tacoma having arrived some #35 plus years ago and viewed and read about a ton of positive changes in that period of time. I lived thru the loss of the Top of the Ocean, the Mike Parker Mayor era, the neon “uproar” in the Tacoma Dome, the Tacoma Rockets,Sabercats, Sonics in Tacoma, Tacoma Stars etc.to name a few and still believe-“there is no place on the planet like Tacoma Wa”……Peace….

Along with the old city hall and former glorious meeting lodge across the street, the Luzon Building is one of my personal favorites in T-town. It will be so beautiful to see the Luzon restored to it’s former glory. Exit 133 needs the penthouse floor in 2009 so lets try to get Derek and Whitney all of the sponsorship they need to make it a reality. Who do you know that wants to see Tacoma’s revival continue? Why don’t you ask them to support Exit133 through sponsorship or donation? I know Exit133 is one of the driving forces in Tacoma’s revival so…..I’m getting to it.
