Do you remember that little project called the Broadway LID? It’s back on the agenda for today’s Study Session and Council Meeting. Apparently an acceptable bid has been submitted and Council will vote to approve (or not) this bid.
Wm. Dickson Company, on its bid of $10,985,807.85, excluding sales tax, budgeted from various funds, for the construction of the Broadway Local Improvement District No. 8645 project – Specification No. PW08-0188F;
Are we ready to try this again?

Hopefully, the city will finally start renovating our blighted sidewalks and Broadway and St. Helens soon.
There are whole sections of St. Helens where tar paper has been laid down where the sidewalk should be with tar smeared on top right across from City Hall and near a slew of historical buildings.
Not to mention the disrepair of the sidewalks on Broadway adjacent to the Spanish Steps which are in decay and the Elks Temple.
So by going rejecting the previous bids and doing some changes to the plans the bid dropped from $11.9M to $11M. A 7.5% drop in the price is pretty good. Hopefully there was not too much quality lost in the changes.
For information, it’s not the easiest, but http://www.cityoftacoma.org/Page.aspx?cid=3073 You’ll find a map that if you zoom in really close, you can kind of make out the planned improvements.
It’s interesting that all the old information (some of which you can see the search engine still finding here) appears to be gone. So much for the web as a location for public records.
I see Karrie Spitzer’s name as the current contact. If you need more info, I’d drop her a line.

Wow . . . it’s like we won the lottery or something! I was all but convinced this was never going to happen with all the hurdles LID has encountered. We’ve still got a ways to go, but it’s good to see some actual progress being made.
This should give my entire neighborhood a major facelift – I can’t wait!
From what I understood Dicksons bid was being protested by another group, Active construction or somethin. So council was going to decide if they should just blow off the other group and take the bid anyways. This is a long story put very short.

Tacoma City Council is not necessarily known for quick decisions, or hasty plans being implemented. I think this shows a level of commitment to making sure what is done today will be worthwhile tomorrow. I also believe foresight was one of the best things our founding fathers had when writing our Declaration of Independence, and other such important documents. If we just get to it, and don’t plan accordingly, we will find ourselves wasting more money, wasting more people’s time, wasting more resources, wasting more patience. I trust the city to do the right thing, (even if it takes a little longer) and continue to work on improving our beautiful, historic, and fantastic city.

$10,985,807.85
Here’s a prime example why I read this blog for local happenings and commentary.
I mean some days it’s funny and other days it’s knee-slappin’ funny.
Regarding this estimate: Usually when I’m dealing with 8-10 digit figures, I tend to round off the decimals.

Mofo,
Leaving all those numbers in there is a classic marketing strategy. Makes the consumer think man I bet they thought this out and this is a good deal
that’s why everything at home depot is $5.43, $17.31 etc.

Mr. Anderson, this is just hearsay but the low bid was $10,985,807.84.
Somethin’ about the bid was submitted past the deadline to qualify.
