We noticed on the Inside the Editorial Page that Wright Park will have free wireless access in time for their Saturday “Grand Opening.”

Wait, scratch that. As Seago notes, free wireless is already installed and working. We took it for a test drive, and so here we are … it’s a beautiful sunny day in the park, we’re here in the middle of it (with full Internet strength) writing away.

Nancy Johnson at MetroParks tells us that they will let Wright Park serve as a pilot program for up to a year as they assess whether this gets people out into parks. The servers will be able to count the number of log-ons and a survey will help them crunch the data as well.

It’s sunny warm(ish) and there are people all over Wright park. Ask your boss, maybe you can work from here too …

That means all of the bloggers should make sure and go there often, log in to goose their numbers.

This is a lot of real estate at stake for the Tacoma blogosphere.

Hey, man,
My post says right in the second sentence that free wi-fi is already up in Wright Park.

Speaking of laptops and wi-fi, you know how local coffee shops fill with solitary customers using their laptops? Seems to me it’s a way for people to be alone together.

Metro Parks could create outdoor coffee shop atmosphere at the park if it would put in an espresso stand surrounded by outdoor tables and chairs. Betcha it’d be popular on nice days.

that would be GREAT for visitors and patients at TG and Mary Bridge if the signal reaches them. I sure hope so. fingers crossed.

I think that something along that line is being considered.

I noticed that last weekend when the girlie and I went to check out the rennovations. I’ll definitely be making my visits an every-weekend thing this summer.

… wait what? A computer geek outside in the sun AND being nerd at the same time?! Let the insanity begin!

I see in David’s column that Ryan Mello initially proposed the idea. Kudos to him! I think it’s awesome.

I can just see it! On any given sunny day you’ll see rows of hip young things lolling around in the grass this summer… getting suntans, drinking Iced tea, being flirty, “telecomuting”. For the 4 weeks we have good strong sun anyway… But it will be awesome for those folks living across the street. Free Wifi!

Wright Park had wireless for months and months before the renovation started. I used it four or five times a week last summer, but I didn’t see anyone else using it even once.

I loved, though, and am very glad to hear it’s back.

(That said, my laptop’s screen is nearly impossible to see on a sunny day.)

While me and my crew is playin’ hoops, you all just go ahead and get your freak on with your cup of Sanka and geek box.

It’s a good idea. Why the heck not? When I had an office job, a long time ago, I would take the paperwork outside whenever I could.

The shady spots will be premium of course, to view the screen.

Great idea. That is, until they take the advice of their financial guru’s and start selling park space for more condo’s and strip malls.
I do like the idea of the little coffee bar and portable tables. Keep it small, movable and unobtrusive though.

I have heard some chatter that the coffee in Wright Park may be a small Starbucks… if you look at some of the signs you can see that they were one of the major donors toward the renovation project. Don’t know how that’ll pan out, but I suspect that if it does go down that way, you’ll probably see an even split between people who like Starbucks and people who don’t want to see corporate coffee so close to Satellite.
