General : Take a Bite Out of Crime
This press release went out and we immediately heard about it from our Eastside friends. They loved the news …
Community Based Services program expands to Eastside, South Tacoma
The City of Tacoma’s Community Based Services program will expand in June to the Eastside and South Tacoma, including the Dometop, Lincoln LAWG (Lincoln Area Watch Group), Lincoln South and Whitman neighborhoods.
The CBS program has also defined a stronger focus. Rather than working to meet any community need, with this new area, the CBS team will partner with the community in the lead to reduce crime, eliminate blight and increase community education and involvement.
This expansion will add a dedicated code enforcement officer, one community liaison police officer, and a program development specialist to the area, with full support from the City of Tacoma as a whole.
The rollout of the new area will begin on June 2 with a kickoff meeting that is currently in the planning stages. Additional communications will follow with details about this gathering. In the months of June, July and August, as staff is trained on the City side, community cleanups will take place. In September, citizen engagement training and priority setting will occur in the expanded area.
To view a presentation that was offered to the Tacoma City Council Public Safety and Human Services Committee, that includes information on the new area and an update on the four current CBS areas, visit www.cityoftacoma.org/cbs
… Welcome to the neighborhood.

This is soooooo cool (I sound like one of my students). The Whitman Area Neighbors have had the opportunity to work with all the groups mentioned in the release. We have a great working relationship. This is only going to make us stronger – I can’t wait…

Aren’t those neighborhoods in the South End and not South Tacoma?
And I really wish the city would have expanded to the east side of Portland Ave.. That area really needs some help.

Whitman is in the South End – we have been called South Tacoma & the Eastside several times – we prefer to be called the “ridgeview” neighborhoods.

Hello Jake,
If you view page 14 of the PowerPoint presentation regarding the CBS expansion (which you can find at www.cityoftacoma.org/cbs), you’ll see that the Phase III in 2009 will spread the CBS program to the entire Sector 4, which covers the Portland Avenue area.
Also, I know that the community members in this section are ramping up to do some powerful things to jointly fight blight and crime in the Portland Ave. area, which the City will support them on.
If you have any other thoughts or questions, you can always email me, roxanne.murphy@cityoftacoma.org.
Thanks!
Roxanne

Yeah, but what about my ridgeview neighborhood idea – that sounds catchy!!!!
Wherever we live (eastside or south end), I am excited about this program coming to our area and working with all those folks to make this one of the bets communities to love in (I already think that)..
Let’s move forward with the CBS!!!
