This Thursday marks opening day of the Downtown Farmers Market for 2008. The market will run every Thursday until October, from 9th to 11th on Broadway. Food, produce, and flowers will be abundant.

This year a new feature at the market will be the “Local Living Lounge”. The Local Living Lounge is a place created for our community to congregate and eat, see, do, experience and learn together. Tomorrow will be the kick-off with “Go Local Tacoma” Day, but the Lounge will be around all season. Look for changes weekly, and yours truly will be there with a couple new projects.

Should be nice weather. Come visit us, support our farmers, and get involved!

If Thursday afternoon isn’t a good time to shop local… a Farmers Market is starting July 15th on 6th Ave (at 6th & Pine near the E-9).

The 6th Ave fresh market is Tuesday evenings… 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. thru September 30th

I was just down at the Farmer’s market at it’s really starting to pick up. They’ve got the band going, a kid’s play area (w/ Tacoma Mama ), heaps of flowers, fresh veggies, and assorted lunch stuff.

They also had some good little reminders about how helpful farmer’s markets are to the local economy. Things like the fact that over 60% of the money spent at a farmers market stays in the community versus 25% at a grocery store.

While this time my $ went for eggs & flowers, I also got to chat with some familiar faces. All of which were well worth the trip.

Farmers Markets = Good. I love ‘em, I’d do all my shopping there if I could. Between Proctor and the new one on 6th, I’m excited.

However, does anyone want to tell me who thought it was a good idea to have this between 9am and 2pm on a workday? Seriously, this is a joke. Anyone want to fess up?

I’ve noticed that tons of local Tacoma retail businesses are open 9-5 weekdays. I don’t have a fancy MBA or anything, but that seems to me like a great way to sit around alone all day and be closing your doors just in time for your customers to get off work. This farmers’ market is the same thing. Who can shop between 9am and 2pm on a weekday? 15% of the population, maybe?

The farmers market was packed! It was nice to see many regular readers and all our local farmers. Exit133 (me) will be there all summer so stop by and say hello.

Many who work downtown come out on their lunch breaks or other breaks to pick up some flowers or produce before heading back to the cubicle. The vendors never seem to have a problem selling their wares- believe me, if it wasn’t worth it the farmers wouldn’t be there.

Lots of kids in the bubbles provided by Tacomamama and tons of locals stopped by the local living lounge. Thanks Tacoma for reminding me why I love this city!
