The 900 block of Fawcett Ave is home to a little piece of green space called McCormick Park. Don’t worry if you’re having trouble with a mental picture; we had to think about it too. Kevin has a write-up of the park with pictures if you want to jog your memory.
This park is the subject of a CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) plan being implemented by the Tacoma Police Department. Look for an ornamental fence to go up around the park in the very near future.
We’ll keep an eye out for any construction.

Just take the ornamental fence from the Glass Bridge and transfer?
Two, two problems solved in one!

What a shame to put a fence, ornamental, or otherwise around this charming little park. Put a fence on it, put a lock on it, and the so called undesirable elements will get in but with the fence in place people will just forget about the park and the park will become a private sanctuary for the “undesirable” elements. It is better to make sure this park is populated with a variety of users, fences only create further neglect.

if we outlaw the parks then only the outlaws will enjoy them. The fence is a horrible idea. the friggin’ cops should not be our urban designers.
It’s a god damn shame is what it is.

Sounds like a waste of money to me. I’m willng to bet we could use the funds in a much better way.

I saw a comment under the “Dog Run in Wright” park thread about these parks. There is going to be a meeting and a clean up party tonight. I’d link it but I’m on my way out the door.
A fence could possibly make it a nice NY style dog park area. From what I understand this park is already underutilized and they are trying to figure out a way to make it safe and more usable.
Is this another park that should be a building? Even though it’s surrounded by buildings, there are no eyes on the street – or the park.
Although the location of the park, just downhill from the revolving door of the county jail, makes it an ideally rest stop for weary “travelers.”

I know this park very well. My mom lives across the street from it. For awhile now drug users have used that park for the obvious, but have also been sleeping in it and using its fountain for a bath tub. The good people across the street, all elderly have not been able to use the park. But they have been taking pictures of the activities there and have also let the drug dealers and users know that they are being watched. One officers mother lives in that building and he gave out his phone number to call anytime if there was activity there. Not sure if the fence will help, but its worth a try anyway.
