Lewis & Clark Apartments Business District Member

Situated on Tacoma’s grandest residential boulevard, the Lewis & Clark has provided luxury apartment living to the city since being built by the Lewis brothers in 1909. No expense was spared to provide the then rising city of Tacoma with grand apartment living fit for only the best families.

Architects Darmer & Cutting first envisioned a single building on the corner of 3rd and Yakima. The exterior featured clinker brick on the second and third floors and timber with plaster on the fourth. This style was described as “unusual” by the Tacoma Daily Ledger in 1909. Demand for the eight units was so great that a second identical building was built right next door. Now, more than ninety years later, the exterior of the two buildings is still true to its original form and the look reveals a grand sophistication not always seen in the other all brick buildings in the neighborhood. A rarity among buildings of this age and size, the units have never been divided and many of the units have maintained their original built-in cabinetry, “disappearing beds,” and windows. The buildings feature hardwood floors, leaded glass windows, tall ceilings, and spacious rooms.
