In the last few months I’ve noticed that it’s been more and more difficult to shake that stuck-in-the-head song. Now, if it were good songs I wouldn’t be so concerned. Except, it’s all junk. The music I listen to isn’t all junk, but the sticky ones seem to be. For example, I was in the office last week listening to a radio show on my iPod when a co-worker asked me what I was rocking out to. My head had been doing an ever so slight bob to the beat of the music. My mouth was lipping the lyrics. I had to think about it. What was I listening to? Oh that… that’s Too Legit to Quit by Hammer. Good God. Did I just say that? Then, after talking my way out of that awkward music moment, the song wouldn’t leave. The background music of my day – actually the next few days – was “Too Legit.” It hurt.
The reason I thought about this was because yesterday I found myself scatting in the car to a song with no lyrics. “Dah dah dot, do dot, Daht. Doht.” What was it? Why was I faking a hit to the high hat to a song I couldn’t determine. Where were the lyrics? Then, the realization. It was the Super Mario Brothers Theme. I never played the game. I did, however, download the piano sheet music several months ago and had played through a few of the songs. I hadn’t played it or looked at it since. Now it was coming back with a vengeance. “Dah dah dot, do dot, Daht. Doht.” Ah, the pain.
Time to find some new music, put it on repeat, and clear the head.

MC Hammer? You poor bastard. I have a sorry music situation as well. I work in an environment where the women listen to soft rock all day and when Anna Nalick’s “Just Breathe” song comes on (at least 3 times a day) they all start softly singing the lyrics. Granted it is not my type of music, in fact its drivel, but sometimes crap like this gets stuck in your head. The key is to cultivate a list of songs that you enjoy and don’t mind replaying in your head. The latest song in my arsenal came to me after seeing the Jack Daniel’s commercial featuring Jane’s Addiction’s “Jane Says” (kinda ironic that a whisky company chose a song about a woman with a heroin problem by a band with the word Addiction in its name to promote hard alcohol). In a good way this song was stuck in my head to the point that I hunted the CD down that contained the track. Finally found it (Kettle Whistle), downloaded it to my iPod and by chance saw the video on TV that night (synchronicity?). Its amazing how steel drums and Perry Farrell’s voice can drive those pop demons from your head.
