Bye Bye to 23 Union Square (25. September 2008, 07:23 by Derek Young) ~ We Hardly Knew You

The News Tribune is reporting that the proposed 23 Union Square project, a development at the corner of South 23rd and Union on property owned by the Elks, is dead.

You weren’t exactly fans of the original plan

Maybe the next round of ideas will be more interesting to you.

Well, it would have been an improvement over the existing acres-of-parking state, but the plans weren’t very exciting. Not that I’ve heard any better specific ideas, just “more” and “bigger” wishes.

That would have been a great spot for a Whole Foods.

I agree with Jake…bring in the Whole Foods!

Sell the whole property and move the Elks back to a refurbished Elks Lodge in DT Tacoma. Bigger isn’t always better.
If this happened, hell, even I’d join.

Here’s an idea; one of those feel good community-building projects that everyone can participate in:

Dismantle the old Broadway Street Elks and Spanish Steps and rebuild them at South 23rd & Union.

Does Tacoma really need a Whole Foods? It is a great store but very much out of my price-range, as is the case with most Tacoma residents I think. I’m all for a new organic market, but there must be a more affordable option. (Trader Joe’s????)We already have Metropolitan Market for expensive groceries, why not support the local company?

Is it too much to ask to scrape off that black top parking lot and plant a cornfield?

Maybe some of you folks don’t know this, but just a few miles down the freeway there’s a tortilla chip plant located in the former farm lands of Fife…Does the name Diane’s ring a bell?

There are a lot of vacant lots in Tacoma that could be planted with corn.

Think about it y’all.

How about getting rid of the blacktop, and planting trees and have Connie Ladenburg get money to build a trail thru it? Maybe she could get this done before she leaves office? Oops, guess not, she wouldn’t have enough time!

Keep the blacktop parking lot. Apply for federal money to plant two columns of trees and make a woodland trail through it.

The news about 23 Union Square awhile back definitely wasn’t too exciting. Tacoma can do better than just another ubiquitous strip mall.
