The City is currently developing its Complete Streets Design Guidelines. What is a complete street? It’s a street that enables and balances safe, convenient access for all users, including drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, and people of all ages and abilities, as well as fostering a sense of place in the public realm. With that said, it’s an ongoing process that’s been highly collaborative involving many stakeholders in both public agencies and the community.
Do you want to take part in the discussion? Over the next few weeks there will be two public workshops. The events will include presentations, walking tours, and workshops. Interested? The first workshop is Thursday.

Is it safe to assume that the second even will also be occurring while the majority of us are at work?

Tacoma is now thinking about complete streets guidelines? Never would have guessed. I’ve always assumed there was someone behind the scenes conspiring to keep Tacoma stuck with a 20th century planning mentality. With the new Mixed Use Center regulations, and Complete Streets, could Tacoma actually be taking steps toward becoming a forward thinking, well-planned modern city?

Yes, a great concept. We’ve gone through that before. Daytime meetings regarding mixed use centers, redesigning the business districts and prioritize funding. The city outsourced the work to some consulting firm. That was about a year and a half ago? Nothing ever came from that. Probably gathering dust on some old shelf.

Perhaps before we worry too much about complete streets we should just get home owners to trim their hedges. Nothing annoys me more than when I’m taking a walk and I have to leave the side walk because somebody’s rhody or something has completely taken over.
