The complicated tale of the fabled Foss Waterway Hotel project has taken another turn. The Biz Buzz is reporting that both the Foss Waterway Development Authority and Bob Thurston (the Seattle hotelier who owns the property) are seeking a buyer for the project. It’s available with all the permits and work that has been done in the past few years. It all comes down to financing again …
Do you remember when we were talking about a sandy beach on the Foss?
Sigh. Anybody got a spare million bucks laying around?

This is just too sad for words. Somewhere someone is sticking a fork in Tacoma testing it to see if it done.

If this project did not pencil in 2005, 2006, or 2007 – then it’s not a surprise that it does not pencil now. But more alarming is the speed at which the air is leaving Tacoma’s balloon. Luzon – DEAD. Foss Hotel – DEAD. Russell – likely gone. Davita – strongly considering Puyallup. Car Museum – Looking for $7 million. The Port – laying off.
Tacoma is looking staring at a whole bunch of backwards steps right now in terms of economic development, like 12-15 years worth of steps backwards.

Why not make the soon-to-be-empty Russell building into a hotel? The outside looks good, the building has great views.
Tacoma should then fight for some of the cruise business flocking (or should I use floating) to Seattle from Canada. No passport required! Set up some cruiseship terminals in the port, create jobs, offer a free shuttle service from the terminal to downtown TAC. Some cruisers would stay in downtown; others would need taxis to Seattle and/or the airport. Cruisers coming in to start their cruise would be more likely to stay in a hotel in Tacoma near the boat. win win win…

Does tacoma really need anymore hotels? I didn’t realize we have such a deluge of tourists. I think the real solution is another enormous, and unsightly condo building, that way, we can just invite all of these destitute travelers to stick around permanently.

If we have more hotels more people will got to the convention center is my understanding. The only thing keeping all those people away from Tacoma is a lack of hotel rooms, nothing else.

To be fair, Spokane is the only deal in town, if you know what I mean. It’s easy to get a hotel within 30 miles of where you need to be here.
Back in E WA, Spokane is by itself. There may well be the need for 3K hotel rooms.
