According to the News Tribune, the Russell Investment Group has pledged $250,000 to the UWT Business School. The money will be used to create an endowed professorship at the school in order to find and maintain top-notch teaching talent. It’s good to see local investment in the future of our local education resources.
This is particuarly interesting to me because it comes on the same day that I turned in my application for the UWT MBA program – just three days after I drove to Yakima to take the GMAT and fourteen days after I decided the time was right to go back to school. It’s been a pretty hectic two weeks.

Why drive all the way to Yakima for the test? Isn’t there a testing center in South Hill?
Congrats on going back to school. I’m about 1/3rd of the way through the MBA program at Seattle U, and I don’t regret it a bit.

I do believe MBA.com recently changed their testing center contract. So Renton is the only area testing center and it was booked way out into the future. Portland, Vancouver and Victoria, BC, were all booked. Yakima had one seat available before the application deadline. The University of Montana had a seat or two. The whole experience was a bit epic.
I’ve been debating getting an MBA degree too. What sold you on UWT?
...aside from location of course….

Actually, location is a big part of it. Once I decided that that business school would be a good idea, I looked at my options. Kirkland for the UW evening program? Seattle University? UWT is in Tacoma. My Tacoma. Our Tacoma. But aside from location, a big part of an MBA is meeting peers in the business community around you. I felt that the Tacoma program could offer me something, literally, closer to home. The networks I would create through my classes would be around me, in my neighborhoods. On a slightly more big picture level, I’ve also been wanting to be more involved in the campus as part of my own development in the city. UWT is a big part of the community of Tacoma and it’s not something I’ve been a part of. This would be an opportunity to be a part of something exciting in our community while also getting something I need for my own professional advancement.
