I’ve received more emails in the last few months about the Pacific Square project than any other. Most of these emails simply say, “Why?” or “What is it?” So here it is. Find out for yourself. Go to the party and take some pictures.
From the City:
Mayor Bill Baarsma will kick off the festivities at a ribbon cutting ceremony April 22 at 12:30 p.m. for the new Pacific Square at South 17th Street and Pacific Avenue. The ceremony will commence at the end of the Daffodil Parade.
The ribbon cutting concludes a $4.1 million downtown redevelopment project that was funded with Public Works Trust Funds as well as money from Sound Transit, state grants and City Open Space funds.
The ceremony marks the opening of Tacoma’s first downtown public square. Pacific Sqaure includes a terraced amphitheater, a cascading water feature with large reflecting pools, wide stairs and ramps that connect Pacific Avenue to Commerce Street. The public gathering space also features a large grassy area to the west of the tracks for the Link Light Rail.

From the quoted press release:
The ceremony marks the opening of Tacoma’s first downtown public square.
So, um, Theater Square isn’t a public square? Or isn’t downtown? I’m confused.
Oh yeah, and:
The public gathering space also features a large grassy area to the west of the tracks for the Link Light Rail.
Eek. Hope it isn’t too easy to accidentally run across those tracks…
Anyway, I’ve been watching this park through its various stages along the way, and it will be cool to finally see it being used as a park!
It is looking better with all of the plants going in.. It was looking like a big hunk of pretty cement.. We are getting all of these ampitheaters around town (Albers Mill. Point Defiance, now Pacific Square) are they going to be used?

This is an interesting place. Right in the middle of everything.
The new park was in a wasteland for years.
Ok city council, you have proven you can clean up the area of Pacific Avenue by UWT, now please try to clean up the north end of Pacific by the Theater District!
