Another great document is Oscar Newman’s
Creating Defensible Spaces:

This is the document being sent around town (by HUD) showing why high rise “projects” such as the Winthrop have been torn down around the county in major cities and simple do not work.

Disbursed low income house is the proper model which produces good results for all involved.

My heart sank when I heard the news. I just finished The Death and Life of Great American Cities not a week ago. She was definitely a breath of fresh air in planning – noting that the dominant mindset of towers in the sky were nothing more than the fanciful visions of people who really didn’t know how cities functioned.

Her ideas helped to rekindle study of denser, mixed use, pedestrian-oriented developments. Gosh, I’m sad to hear that she’s gone.
