A Tollefson Zamboni? ( 8. January 2010, 11:51 by Dave) ~ Just don't get called for icing.

Be it a jumping a Salchow, throwing a hip check or leaning into a fast inside line, your opportunity to strap on your Blades of Glory may be right around the corner. The Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber, Downtown Merchants Group and Tacoma Art Museum have partnered to establish a holiday ice rink at Tollefson Plaza for 2010. This January and February will be a feasibility period where sponsors will be solicited. Sponsors can help through either cash donations or gifts in kind. Sponsors will receive various forms of recognition at the event and in the ads but first, what they need is advertising.

If you’ve always wanted a sporting facility named after you, this may be your opportunity. Meanwhile, we’re contacting our Minnesotan relatives to see if they can find our old skates.

For more information, contact Cameron Fellows at 253-272-4258 ×3012 or cfellows@tacomaartmuseum.org and online at downtowntacoma.com

Are you as excited as we are?

I am so in favor of that.

Fantastic……may I ask the same “Vision Team” to consider another concept that has been mentioned for that space—-once the Sun (warm’s up around here) reappears in N.West, place a Merry Go Round at Tollefson….borrow the success formula from Pt. Defiance and locate the needed equipment (get a major Sponsor ) and the horse’s named (sponsor again) and start the Happy Music tunes playing that every person will recognize as a FUN event !

Hoooooraaaay!

Say it slowly, say it fast, say it over and over: ZAMBONI.
Seriously, if they put in an ice rink, would love to skate there. I would need to comb the local vintage shops for a really cool muffler.

I love the merry-go-round idea, do you think it will it have a caliope? I love that word, too.

Let me understand this:

Skateboarding is bad.
Ice skating is good.

Got it.

Wow…a creative idea for an wasted space. I love the idea, and I would skate!

I miss Lakewood Ice Arena, before it fell into the lake, though Sprinker’s decent, and makes for a nice outing. But I haven’t experienced outdoor skating in a long time. Re Tollefson, I was really skeptical about the technical feasibility, but after some googling, I guess temporary instant ice rinks are not uncommon.

I seem to recall that people were allowed to skate on the ice at the Tacoma Dome at one time. Was that just a dream or does anyone else remember that. Sadly I once had a run in with a Zamboni so I tend to steer clear of the ice. After years of therapy I can now order ice in a drink without crying hysterically.

I love the ice skating idea. I’ll be there.

The merry-go-round idea? Brilliant. There’s probably the most beautiful merry-go-round I’ve ever seen at Jantzen Beach Shopping Mall in Portland that has a questionable future. I know that mall is going to close the part where the merry-go-round currently resides so I’m wondering what will hppen to it? Maybe I’ll do some research… It’s an amazing one.

Chase down that merry go round, Jesse. The location is perfect, the Sponsors will want to help, and the kids and the parents will ride. It can be kept secure and safe at night and during the day can be running daily. One or two major players for naming rights (MultiCare-Port of Tacoma etc. ) with every horse and side board painted with the logo and NAME of the rest of the Companies that LOVE TACOMA and embrace FUN !!

I smell buttered popcorn !!

I await a huge spinning advertisement in the middle of Tollefson Plaza. Seems to be the appropriate metaphor for the City of Tacoma.

I’m sure Clearchannel would find a way to put a billboard on top of it as well.

How much do I have to pay as a sponsor to get this to the the “O’Tool Ice Rink”?

This is, I have to humbly say, is probably the BEST idea I have ever heard proposed for Tollefson. I love this idea!

If they build it, by god, I’ll be there… I just hope it is up for longer than a week.

Can we keep the rink open late at night for an over-40 shinny and/or broomball league? Perfect location for retiring post game to the Swiss. No raising the puck, OK?

Crenshaw… I recall the ice skating sessions… back when we had the Sabercats. Maybe we could set up a sheet of ice for curling.
