Councilmember Fey Announces Candidacy for 27th LD Seat (23. February 2010, 07:43 by Derek Young) ~ Tis the Season

Tacoma City Councilmember Jake Fey announced at Monday’s 27th Legislative District meeting that he will run for the seat being vacated by State Rep Dennis Flannigan. Just in case you missed it, an email went out last week announcing that Flannigan had chosen not to run for reelection in 2010. The email went on to challenge its readers to find and support a good candidate to replace him. Fey is the first to announce.

Who else wants in? Anybody?

I’d vote for him.

Will this leave another vacancy on Tacoma City Council if Fey wins?

I think so. Apparently term limits for the city council means everyone on it is constantly looking for another job.

Are you throwing your hat in that ring, Erik?

Looks like the city council will need to appoint another member.

Procedure:
1) announce application process
2) write $7500 check to Tacoma News Trubune
3) close doors and pick someone.

I seriously want to know what these candidates are planning to do. I want a platform, with specifics.

Jake’s not a bad guy, but, seriously, I want state tax reform. I want transportation reform so that we can use some state money to repave Tacoma’s roads.

Open seats for the legislature don’t come around very often. We have to pick this person carefully, since they’ll likely be there for the next 8-10 terms.

Jake’s been a solid voice for his district on the city council.

Most of his council district is in the 27th LD, and he’s incredible on the policy side, he knows people, he understands balance between people and business.

It’s a solidly Democratic district, with about a 30 percent vote for Rs in state house races. It’ll be interesting with the top two primary to see how many people jump into the race. Last time (2002, I think) there were 6 Democratic candidates in the primary.

The party will probably pick a candidate during a nominating convention prior to the filing period.

It’ll be tough to find someone with Jake’s accomplishments.

Go Jake go!

And @6 Chris K.- it’s going to take more than the safe D seats advocating for tax reform. If you mean income tax (along with decrease in sales and B&O), it takes 2/3 vote in both the House and Senate. Plus a vote of the people, b/c an income tax requires a constitutional amd. Plus a likely court challenge. I’m not saying Jake (or whichever D takes the seat) isn’t up to the task….it’s just that he’s going to need a lot of help. And after the 2010 state elections….the D’s won’t have the #s they have now, which isn’t even 2/3.

But again, go Jake go!

Jake is a pragmatic guy with a strong chance to win.

Dear City Council. I am still available to serve my city should an empty seat need to be filled with a hairy posterior.

Also, with respect to Mr. Fey, he ran a glorious campaign against nobody for his re-election on the city council, it will be fun to see him actually run against an opponent!

drill baby drill!

How many signs will Jack need if he’s actually running against someone?

Wow, it is March 4th and the News Tribune finally picks up on this. Up to date reporting, I think not.
