Coffee Roaster Goes All Ages Venue? (28. April 2006, 06:59 by Derek Young) ~ Coffee and Music

Commencement Bay Coffee Company has become a music venue. I’ll admit I’m out of touch with the all ages music scene in town, but I can’t think of many options around town. This could be a good thing. I do fear for any company that begins expanding beyond its core business. Music may be the right step. Selling beer and wine in addition to music seems like it may be stretching a bit. Whatever. a new venue should be a good thing for our little town.

Commencement bay is a great place but way out from the center of town. Used to be almost always empty but I have not been there for awhile.

Two new coffee shops opening downtown:

First, the Kickstand by th Grand Theater is opening up again with a new owner. Hope it works this time. (Open May 1st)

Second, there is a new one being opened on the first level of he condo on St. Helens next door to the YWCA building.

the new coffee shop, Java Bean, looks to be the same folks who have some shops in Seattle- they do a good job, I think it will be a good addition to the hood

Me too. Great to see them there. They are in a middle of a huge dead zone downtown on St. Helens.

Yet, there are also in the middle of a huge number of condos moving in and there is alot of vehicle traffic on that street. We will see if they wil slow down to get some coffee.

Another great new coffee place downtown is “Darkwater Cafe” by the municipal building. Best coffee in town for those who like expresso drinks. All of the seasoned baristas work there.

Now, if we can just keep the city employees from moving out of downtown when we need the most. Maybe in 7 more years, but not now.

James, that’s actually Blackwater rather than Darkwater. But they do have excellent drinks.

Ok, here it is:

Black Water Cafe

Kings Books describes it as:

“the hippest new coffee joint in Tacoma”

Take a few moments and look at their web site. It is incredible.
