Saturday Excitement Downtown: Tacoma’s Twilight Criterium Bicycle Race (11. June 2010, 14:25 by Daniel Rahe) ~ gonna wish the potholes were fixed

Very fast twilight bicycle racing. Live music. DJ’s. Beer garden. Olympic Speedskating Medalist J.R. Celski. Free prizes. The reasons to go downtown for Tacoma’s very first criterium are many.

From 3pm until 11pm, races will be held for several levels of competitors – from qualifying pros to speedy children. The course runs straight through the heart of downtown, along Pacific Avenue and A Street, between S. 8th and S. 12th.

This race, a part of the 2010 Cascadia Crits series, is modeled after a Boise criterium with a dedicated fan-base and a 20-year history. Presented by Michelob Ultra, it is brought to Tacoma in partnership with Tacoma Bike and Tacoma/Pierce County Sports Commission. Many local businesses have signed on as sponsors for this exciting event.

If you’re interested in racing, registration will be open through race day online. For registration details and requirements, as well as event schedules, visit Cascadia Crits website

Thank you everyone for your support and enthusiasm for this first year event.

Before I go any further I want to make sure we acknowledge our third partner, Junefish, branding, communications, events. They delivered J.R. Celski, created the Art Bike Parade, and have been vital to the successful promotion and marketing of the Criterium. Thank you Dean and Gillian at Junefish.

Thank you to all of our sponsors, volunteers, partners, MJ McDermott at Q13 for the weather, and anyone who has spread the word about what we are trying to accomplish.

We hope to see you on race day.

Such a great event! I han into a lot of new and old friends along Pac-Ave. Great volunteer support. One of the friendly TPD officers working traffic by the old City Hall commented to me what a friendly crowd it was. BTW, thank you Learning Sprout and everyone involved in putting on the kids’ races. They had such a good time!

It was fun to watch! Standing at the corner as the bikes flew around was dizzying.
