Nothing says sunshine and summer weather quite like a poetry reading … am I right? Ok, not exactly. But if you find yourself wondering what you should do tonight – consider Tammy Robacker’s (Tacoma’s third, and current, Poet Laureate) Premiere reading at 7 p.m. in downtown’s Main Library. Robacker, recently named the 2010 Soul of the City Tacoma Poet Laureate, will be giving her first official reading tonight with former poet leareates William Kupinse and Antonio Edwards. If that’s not enough – Jessica Spring (of Tacoma letterpress fame) and Robacker are rolling out their first installment in a broadside series commemorating Tacoma’s Poet Laureate.
Don’t be leery of attending a poetry reading, I promise you’ll enjoy it. Robacker’s poetry is excellent: profane, funny, touching and maybe a little sexy. Of course Kupinse and Edwards are also excellent poets.
Regardless, all three are professionals and their poetry, as good as anything you’ll hear anywhere else, never leaves the sour taste in your mouth you get from amateur coffee-shop poetry readings. Not every city can claim such a testament to it’s arts community as Tacoma’s poet laureateship. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness and experience it tonight.
