Spaceworks Tacoma Brings Windowfront Art to Downtown ( 7. July 2010, 09:13 by Daniel Rahe) ~

In the spring of this year, Spaceworks Tacoma (a joint initiative of the City of Tacoma, Shunpike and the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce) began planning a range of artistic installations, residencies, and creative projects to make use of several vacant downtown storefronts. As reported in the Tacoma Daily Index, the first of these projects are now taking shape, with the official July 29 Opening Night festivities at the Theater on the Square approaching.

This month, projects can be found at 628 St Helens Avenue, 906 Broadway, 913-915 Pacific Avenue, 950 Pacific, 1114 Broadway, and Broadway & 11th.

After the recent setbacks suffered by The Speakeasy Arts Cooperative, and the shuttering of The Helm Gallery last year, it is encouraging to see a sustained arts focus in Tacoma’s downtown (without forgetting the weekly Friday Frost Park Chalk Off, of course). Spaceworks Tacoma enjoys the advantages of commitment and investment from municipal and business interests, and brings innovative ideas to unused real estate.

We are happy to see this project moving ahead and look forward to strolling through Downtown to see new life springing from those dark windows.

There is a new art gallery opening soon near Amocat. That area looks like it’s all full now.

I’ve seen the art in the windows on Broadway and think that they need to cover up the vacant space behind the art. It looks like vacant space with art in front of it. It would looks better if all the passerby/visitor/potentail tenant saw was the art.
