Brewery District Hotel Moves Ahead (16. July 2010, 07:08 by Derek Young) ~

The Landmarks Preservation Commission has given the green light to the Holiday Inn Express in the Brewery District – a project that we’ve talked about here for nearly 4 years. The hotel will occupy the parking lot and warehouse at South 21st and C Street.

As many readers recall, the historic significance of this area has been a key factor in the design and approval process. We have seen two designs for this site already, and are curious about any changes that have been made. We have old drawings of the project … who wants to send us the updates?

The TNT article in today’s biz section has a picture of the new design.

I think it looks pretty good for it being a new hotel with an industrial look. Nothing is going to be perfect and not everyone can be pleased.

One of the great benefits of these more affordable hotels is it will bring people into Downtown Tacoma. Many business people & government contractors, when visiting Tacoma, stay on Hosmer due to cheaper hotels. Their companies or the government will only pay so much for their lodging. While there are 1 or 2 decent hotels there, that is not a great area. Would you want your family member to walk down Hosmer at night? I wouldn’t. That area does not put Tacoma’s best forward.

These new limited hotels (Foss & Brewery) will bring more business people to Downtown where they will be able to walk around, dine & shop in a pretty safe area.

Good point jake.

It really doesn’t look that bad. Beside, the only way you’re going to get a cool looking hotel is if you a) remodel an older building like the Winthrop, b) paint a normal building with an Orca mural, or c) live in Dubai.
But why is it that this hotel is proceeding without so much of a sneeze from the folks at Murano?

@frizzlebee

Because the Murano likely doesn’t view it as competition, given that the target market of a Holiday Inn Express is very different from that of the Hotel Murano. Not much overlap there, so probably not worth the energy.

I ‘ve stayed in a ton of these HI Expresses, great accommodations at a good price. Jake @ 2 is right, it will offer good business and family accommodation near UW and the CBD. There is also an article and renderings in the NT today about McMenamin’s plans for the ELK’s. They will be offing hotel rooms in addition to their entertainment and dinning venue…both will be great additions to DT.

“will bring more business people to Downtown”

What kind of business people/government workers are we talking about here? The kind that graduated from an ivy league college and know a thing or two about the world? Or the other kind?

“Many business people & government contractors, when visiting Tacoma, stay on Hosmer due to cheaper hotels.”

I see, the other kind.

Yeah not everybody is going to be pleased with the look of the thing, but that’s never an excuse for the city to green light something which doesn’t match the brilliance of subtly and subtext as say the UWT campus.

I guess you have to ask yourself who is running my city, what books have they read and do they spend more time thinking about how they are going to spend the weekend re-organize the garage in their cul de sac palaces of suck in stead of reading some Joseph Conrad or something.

The planned building looks halfway decent, but the Holiday Inn Express sign at the top is the kiss of death to any sky line a Tacomaphile values for it’s all ready meager distinctiveness.

But thats just they way it goes in the DT, almost great, almost famous, but in most cases falling short of glory needed to bring in the real $$$$ needed for further eclectic development.
