3:00pm on a Friday and what better to do than contemplate where the crew should go for the end of the week Happy Hour. If you’re looking for something new, the folks at The Office Bar & Grill have opened their doors for business. They’ve taken over the space last used by the Merende and from our brief glance in the door this afternoon, it looks to be a nice set up. Free Wi-Fi appears to be on the list and I saw what appeared to be a digital jukebox on the back wall.
You can find them at 813 Pacific Ave next door to Paddy Coynes or online here.

I tried to get a coffee at the Side Bar Bistro. They said they weren’t doing the coffee part, but the bar was open. There was no one in the place. I wasn’t interested in an “adult beverage”. There was an entire espresso set up just sitting there. Oh well, I know where I CAN get a coffee. Maybe Side Bar can get some of the folks hanging outside the library across the street to patronize the bar. Hopefully they stock fortified wine.

After a long day in Seattle and having the Blue Angels buffet at the Columbia Tower Club, link: tinyurl.com/lvj474
Pesky Vector #2 called and told me about The Office on Pacific and said maybe we should buzz in there and check it out. We always like new places and have eaten pretty much at a full range of food and drink establishments world-wide.
We REALLY like the Merende so going back to that space seemed like the good thing to do. I reviewed the menu on the flight down from Seattle. Some interesting items appeared such as Deep Fried Mac & Cheese, Deep Fried Twinkies.
The rest seemed like a regular, run of the mill, everywhereville sports bar menu.
We arrived and a medium sized crowd was inside. 4 or five big-flat-screens had everything from the Mariners, to Golf, to Nascar and tha walls have the ubiquitous national, mass produced booz brand advertising. A dvd juke box and a bowling and golf video game occupied what had been the more quieter small table area by the kitchen door.
This vector has bad ears so the cacophony of racing, baseball, and random music overwhelmed the hearing aids at times.
We hopped up on the big stools by the high tables (there needs to be more regular tables – I hate to dangle my legs when I’m eating) by the kitchen door. This is always a prime spot to watch the comings and goings of staff and see other peoples food.
We had a great young future something else that is now a waiter. He said there were some free appetizers by the front door so after giving our order, off I went.
They had french fries (seasoned, coated appeared to be frozen -not fresh cut) large orangish jalapeno poppers, the deep-fried mac-n-cheese, and some others. They were all cold and appeared to have been there for awhile. I returned to the table.
So I had ordered the Jalapeno poppers, the cheese burger with sweet potato fries. PV#2 is vegan so she went with the Portabello muchroom burger. As is often the case when future stars, or business mogels, or doctors are waiting tables and don’t write things down her order went in as a “mushroom bruger” which of course is on the menu but is a burger with mushrooms.
Her wine was great and the waiter had actually sampled it – plus. My root beer came as it should with a very cold glass – sans ice. Excellent. First time in a while that I’ve been served my root beer as a beer and not as a soda.
Then I think the manager came out with some fresh appetizers (meaning hot) and we got to sample the deep-fried mac n cheese. Kind of donutty and needing more cheese in my opinion. Hot out of the fryer it was ok but a chuck left to cool congealed into a solid, day-old cheese donut.
My poppers were kind hot when combining the red jalapeno with a spicy very crisp coating. I’d prefer less of the coating and more of the pepper.
Burgers came out and mine was very good. Clearly a locally ground patty on a very nice bun. Sweet potatoes fries were accompanied with a rosemary mayonaise dressing. Staff came out and realized they had not put mushrooms on the mushroom burger and only then did we realize that it was not the Portabello Mushroom burger.
The ticket was nicely given a discount for the wrong burger even though it was really kind of our fault for not being clear.
Chef made an appearance and seemed to be pretty involved with the overall food production giving me hope and reason to return for some of the other menu items.
Total for apps, two RB’s, Wine, and two burgers came to less than $40.
If this was the first night then it went pretty well.
If you are looking for a sterotypical sports bar with reasonable food or a quick lunch stop this would fit the ticket. Competition will be tough given the widespread presence of more established and “well-greased” operations elsewhere in the City.
On the Vector Sports Bar scale of 1-10 this rates a 5.

With a name like, “The Office” I would give some uniques names to food items with a more political spin and decor.
For example you could have the “Big Mike Lonegran” 3 slices of fried spam on white bread with brown gravy – open face and the “Little Joe Lengran” just 1 slice of fried spam – open face.
the “Lundquist” a long hearty irish/english style beef and provolone hoagie.
the “Mello” A Yummy vegan delight with sprouts, field roast, onions, ‘hold the mayo on my mello’ and spring mix lettuce on a spelt, gluten free bun.
the “Julie Anderson” a cheese lover’s delight with 8 kinds of cheese on toasted wheat.
the “Bill Evans” corned beef and Fortina cheese on jewish rye bread.
the “Connie Ladenburg” pastrami – lots and lots and lots of pastrami.
the “Boe” 5 layers of roast beef over 2 layers of cheddar cheese on a smooth topped onion roll.

A sandwich is too layered and complicated for Marty, so “The Campbell” could be a 7-11 reheated corndog with five cent proceeds going toward mentoring programs.

I work next door at Paddys and have popped my head in there a couple of times to yuck it up with the staff and to snatch up a togo menu. I have yet to dine there but the menu looks interesting. I love the mac n cheese bites at the Ale House so I was excited to see that on the list of starters.
The owner and staff seem very fresh and eager. I look forward to my first visit…Oh, AND they have chicken wings! Sweet.

Ironic to name a sandwich after Mark Lindquist… someone just gave me the anarchist flier which suggests that Mark is a “necrophiliac cannibal”… so maybe he’ll be eating us.
The flier given to me came from Shakabrah. Aparrently there are dozens and dozens of them printed and floating around town. Quite an amusing read.

The full title of the flier is:
“Why Mark Lindquist is a Terrible Person (and Possibly a Necrophiliac Cannibal”.
Has anyone else seen/read it?

Worst nachos in Tacoma!!!!
It is a bar but ends up trying to be bistro with the food.
I wish them luck!!!
But they have to redo their menu. The wings were tiny, nachos (eeekkk!), poppers (great), sliders (ok, paddys next door destroys them taste wise)11 | Posted by brent | Aug 9, 10:22 AM
@ SlimJim Why would you even take the time to talk about this kind of trash being passed around. This is a VERY sick and disturbed individual that needs help very badly.
The topic at hand on the Office, I plan on going to HH today and will give it a whirl. Fresh and eager staff is what alot of places in Tacoma lack these days. More forthcoming….

Brent- Thanks for showing Paddy’s some love! Slainte!!!
Pegster- I look forward to doin happy hour with u today!

@ Pegsterdtown
Are you saying I’m the sick person because I asked if others saw the flier (I wasn’t promoting it), or are you saying the person who wrote it is sick (it’s an Anarchist publication) or are you saying Mark Linquist is sick (suggesting what was written is true)?

Fresh and eager staff? I don’t know how fresh and eager a person who waits tables in Tacoma, Washington for their rent check money can be. You have to understand that somewhere in the big hang over gland between their ears that controls movement and thunk processes there is squishy dendrite that thinks “is this as good as it’s going to get for me”. I used to tip heavily around Tacoma out of pure altruism.

@ SlimJim I was saying that the piece of filth that was passed around should not even be mentioned.
The topic at hand I did go to the Office the food needs some more work and some more seasoning…….(in the kitchen) the waitstaff was GREAT HOLLA Michelle. I will give it another try. I did enjoy the Pino Grigio.

At first I found it odd that there were so few varieties of red wine on the menu (all three wineries from California, I believe) and when I asked for waiter for his recommendation of a red he said they had “Cabs and Chardonney” (he meant Merlot). However, he had actually tasted the house wine to recommend and it was surprisingly good! Made me want to go back and sample the other (few).

I should also have mentioned: both soups are made from scratch daily. Although I agree with Pegster that the squash soup could have used more seasoning, it wasn’t bad, and the tomato basil was wonderful.

Do they have that new wine for men with prostate trouble, Pino More?
