A few minutes ago, Point Ruston issued a press release stating that the closure of Ruston Tunnel will be extended. The tunnel has been closed since Monday, and was originally scheduled to re-open to traffic on September 3. Now, it will remain closed until September 23 while utilities are installed.
Please note that pedestrian traffic and public parking are also prohibited in the closed portions of Ruston Way. Detour signs are in place for those unfamiliar with alternate routes.
We’d like to know: Do any readers regularly travel the Ruston Tunnel? How has the detour been working for you so far? Have there been traffic delays?

I travel from downtown to Ruston everyday for work. Starting last month (before the tunnel was closed entirely – while the detour was still “optional”) there were long delays on Ruston…but never on the detour.
It’s working fine…and I’d gladly take 30th or the detour for a few months to have a nice development on that end of Ruston.
Any word on when they’re closing the tunnel permanently?
i have no idea. I don’t think a site grading schedule has been released yet. I’ll check on that.

I will be sad to see the tunnel close. Driving through the tunnel, honking horns, scaring tunnel virgins… always puts a smile onto everybody’s faces. It’s an institution of Tacoma.
SAVE THE TUNNEL!

While I too have enjoyed the aesthetic pleasures of cruising through the tunnel in a vehicle, as someone who rides a bike through it, I can attest that from the cyclist’s perspective, it can be downright scary. The combination of darkness, dampness, zero shoulder, honking and occasionally speeding vehicles, and some fairly substantial imperfections in the road surface, I’m always a little amazed when I pass through it unscathed. I’ll be glad to have a safer option.

The tunnel is certainly not a sustainable transportation option for Tacoma/Ruston. There’s little room to argue there. BUT…
We should put together some kind of community time capsule to bury in the tunnel when it’s backfilled and capped with concrete.

I’m w/ frazle. I love driving through and continuously honking the shave and a haircut 2 bits rhythm. Ruston will be less Rustic!

The Town of Ruston should have made this a toll tunnel years ago. Where’s the leadership?

The finished product should be good for all types of commuters though I gotta say these detours are not fun or good for the businesses in Ruston.
So I drew my own detour and will gladly hand out the map at Don’s Ruston Market. :)
Just shoot straight down Baltimore to Commercial & right on Winnifred.
Hey and I’m in for the time capsule!

I like the tunnel fine, but I really want a pedestrian option to get from Ruston Way to Ruston, other than the 49th / Ferdinand hill.
