Golden Pear, Blackwater Cafe, and Doyle's (21. May 2006, 19:48 by Derek Young) ~ Eating My Way Across Tacoma

Today was a highly productive day. Not in a work productivity sense, but more from an Exit133 – what places have I not been yet – sense. Today was good.

I started at the Golden Pear at Freighthouse Square. I had wanted to get to Tacoma’s newest produce store since reading a bit about it on Thrice All American. Since I was in the neighborhood, I had to drop in. I was tempted by some gorgeous melons and organic oranges, but thought it would be a bit much to haul a watermelon across town. The peppers in the refrigerated room looked good. Hmm… I chose a bag full of blue potatoes and went on my way.

I caught the Link to head across town. My next stop was the Blackwater Cafe for some coffee and talk with with Kevin, Jamie, and James. The coffee was very good. The free wi-fi was awesome with at least a half dozen people sitting quietly on their computers. In a strange twist we found ourselves sitting next to a regular Exit133 commentor that none of us had met before in person. Online and offline worlds colliding. It felt strange. The afternoon was moving quickly and we had to head out.

James and I next went up the hill to Doyle’s Public House for a drink and quick bite to eat. I hadn’t been in Doyle’s yet, but several friends had been. The windows were open and the light trickled into an otherwise dark pub decor. Soccer (Football) jerseys hung from the ceiling and various Irish pub style momentos hung on the walls. We were a bit confused by the propensity for Scottish memorabilia in addition to the Irish, but all in all it seemed like a great new addition to Tacoma’s drinking scene.

So what did I learn today? I have no idea. However, the food and drink was all quite good and I found three new places to explore. Try them. If you have opinions, tell me.

Golden Pear

Nice to see something working at Freighthouse Square. That place is full of merchants waiting for their ship to come in. Glad it has for some.

Blackwater cafe

Blackwater has all of the best baristas from around town who “graduated” to this place.

No newbies here who are afraid of steam.

The place seems to be taking off after a slow start.

I love Doyle’s; a great mix of people, good hummus plate, and a seat by the window, open, looking out onto the port. Very nice.

PRODUCE! There’s produce at Freighthouse Square! I’ll have to stop by after school each day (sans Farmers Markets days).

I love all 3 of these places and support them all I can. I hope the new Java Bean opening on Market Street doesn’t hurt the Blackwater too much.

Does anyone know what happened to that fish & chips place that was supposed to go in above Doyle’s in the alley?

Doyle’s is excellent. They are always out of the apple/onion relish for the corned beef sandwich though.

“I hope the new Java Bean opening on Market Street doesn’t hurt the Blackwater too much.”

I don’t think there’s much chance of that. The coffee market is pretty big in Tacoma.

The Kickstand poses more of a local threat to blackwater. However, the Kickstand is under new ownership is still trying to figure everything out.

Java Bean could encourage people to stop their cars and actually walk around St. Helens. The place gets alot of high speed traffic. This could be their chance.

If we are lucky, a tenant will move into space by the Java bean.

There are a couple of smaller condos now being occupied and a large on being built.

The fish & chip place next to Doyle’s is slated to open August 1st, but there is another restaurant going in below the fish & chip. The yet to be named establishment will feature American style cuisine with a French flair.

My apologies for being out of the relish and hope that we can avoid that problem in the future.
