Does Tacoma Need Floating Tourism? (22. May 2006, 21:18 by Derek) ~ Living Large On The Water

One of our fearless readers saw this story in Puget Sound Business Journal and thought… Maybe Tacoma needs a bit of this action.

Washington’s tourism leaders anticipate that a record crowd of visitors will surpass last year’s $11.8 billion in spending…

Would something like Argosy Cruises or Ride the Ducks work in Tacoma? Seattle has a bay. Tacoma has a bay. Seattle has summer festivals. Tacoma has summer festivals. Seattle has a booming waterfront with a wide variety of activities. Tacoma has… water.

Any ‘outside the box’ thoughts that could bring a few people to our water and our shores?

I’m still gunnin’ for a Tacoma to Seattle ferry Not exciting enough? Why not make it some kind of express or even a wild jet boat ride like they do down the Rouge River in Oregon?! Yeah—that’d be sweet!

Either that or once we run out of land ‘round here for more condos we can stuff some under the water Sealab style.

That would be sweet. Wake up and watch the octopi.

On a separate note – Once upon a time I sported a tuxedo, picked up my prom date, and went for an argosy style cruise in Long Beach (CA). It basically cruised the working harbor. It seemed cool enough. If we thought that was okay, there must be some potential down here for some cruising. The water around Tacoma and Vashon is a lot nicer than a Long Beach container port.

Location, location location. An east facing water front with views of green trees and container ships where the hill side eclipses the sun by 3pm just can’t garner the “vibe” that Seattle’s geographical local has.

There is the option of the way north portion of Tacoma over across the bay. Scoot across the port and take Marine View Drive up to the Cliff House at the edge of Dash Point. It’s a ritzy place so skip the Maitre ‘d and rumble down the stairs into Guidos. It’s the bar with the view and an abreviated menu from the same exec chef. The west facing windows get you a sweet view of Tacoma and all the firefly lights of the fork lifts working the docks. Pretty easy on the wallet as well.

Has anyone else noticed the catamaran (double hulled ship) docked in the Thea Foss? Lots of deck space with numerous chairs set up. Is something in the works already?

I’ve noticed that too, Mike. Right down by the 15th Street ramp? Looks like a great party/event boat. I wonder who owns/operates it?

A few years back, there was a ‘water taxi’ that operated along the city waterway. With the growing number of marinas, one would think it could work again….although I have noticed the floats in front of most waterfront restaurants along Schuster Parkway have vanished….I suppose because of the shoreline management hassles one has to overcome to sink new pilings anywhere? Sad…
