A benevolent tipster has pointed out to us that the building at 612 Tacoma Ave. South is scheduled for demolition per the Filthy 15 website. This property has had its problems over the years with drugs and the homeless, but it’s still a piece of history and it will be a loss. What is it that we’ll be losing? This buidling was one of the earlier multi-family homes on the hill above downtown. It was built in 1889 as a double house. In 1905 the two family home was diced up into apartments as were a lot of the large multi-family homes in the city at this time. Our tipster stated that the home ”...looks like a cool building. It has that Southern look.. Could have been in New Orleans or something.” Maybe its time has come. Maybe we’re just too lazy to have a good fix.
What will be built in its place? Any guesses? Condos from what we hear.

I’ll drive by on my way home to see if it’s still there. If so, I’ll snoop around and snap some photos.
Stay tuned…

I sure am a supporter of keeping Tacoma’s historic buildings. There are a great many that have been knocked down that should not have.
However, the Filthy 15 is a long ways from making the list in my view unless it was a building like the Elks.
The building does look like it has some good qualities if someone wanted to pour a ton of money into it.
However, it has been an eyesore for years and a certified blight on the city.
Please forgive me if I say “good riddance.”

I’m not saying we should protect this place. My intention in posting it here is to simply let people know what’s going away. It’s not just a building. It’s a building with a history. Every building has some history. Rather than let them simply disappear I want to know what it is instead of what it was. It’s awareness. We should know what we’re knocking down.

Thanks for doing that.
I will say that there are at least two buildings on the Filthy 15 that should stay : the Elks and the small North End house.

Grabbed some farewell photos after work tonight. Seems like it had a somewhat dull history as an apartment complex but it’s got a fun look to it. I wonder if there’s anything worth saving?

Nice Photos Kevin. Great work.
However, they demonstrate the place is in far worse than the front shot indicates.
Hopefully, something nice looking can be built here to replace it to try to bring a positive influence to the neighborhood.

Another thing that would greatly improve that neck of the woods would be to see something happen to the green colored building across the street. It’s presently just a blank faced wall.

I am afraid about half of the buildings in the area are in poor shape.
Its a little sad as it has potential. The area is between the courthouse and the Stadium district.
Oh well, one step at a time.

I think at one time this would have been a great “project” – but that was before the entire building was stipped… it’s pretty much just a shell now…
