UWT Continuing to Expand? (30. May 2006, 05:52 by Derek Young) ~ We Should Clean Out Our Ears

We received an email this weekend from a tipster that heard something about UWT “buying the entire block.” He was near South 19th and Yakima at the time and there are three houses there that are pending sale (the last time we checked). Is UWT expanding further up the hill? Our understanding is that the school had no aspirations beyond Tacoma Avenue, so has something changed or are we hearing things?

I did some research and one of the houses for sale was purchased by a developer who has been buying up property in the neighborhood. Not sure if he is buying the other 2 homes.

He is planning :

7 towhnomes on the SE corner of 21st and Yakima (currently a house on the site)

A mixed use building on 23rd and Tacoma Ave.

A 40 townhome developement on the 2300 block of G Street.

So maybe the UWT is buying another block?

It would be great for UWT to continue to expand.

Tacoma is a town of 200,000 and needs a significant university.

UPS and PLU simple do not do it, they are nice but far too small.

UWT now is going to have its first freshman. Going in the right direction but still miles to go.

When the UWT decides to start building again I hope they do the city a favor and start at the western border (Tacoma Ave.?) That area needs some cleaning up and with the 100’s of condos going in, the area could use some retail options.
There are only so many people that will continue purchasing in this area on speculation on what is to come.

I also know a large apartment property owner and management company owns a nice piece of land on the west side of Tacoma. Ave between 19th and 21st. Maybe if UWT starts up the hill they will build the apts. alittle sooner.
