Once upon a time I picked up a degree in biology and thought it would be pretty sweet to get into laboratory research. Me and the bugs hanging out saving the world with our Erlenmeyer flasks. Now, as I sit in an office every day… nevermind. Tacoma is eyeing a nine acre surplus military facility in the tideflats for the Urban Waters marine science laboratory. The city is already considering another property on the Thea Foss that is closer to UWT and downtown, but this new property, with its building and dock, is more finished from the get-go. I eye property all the time and it doesn’t amount to much… sorry, back to the topic. The Thea Foss property will be fine if Urban Waters doesn’t pick it up and this is an opportunity for a little long term mixed use in our port. But that’s just my opinion.

From a development standpoint, I think it would be wiser for the city and UWT to stick to their guns on the Foss site…it will be good to have some non-residential Foss development that still has public value, and it seems like port land in the tideflats is in pretty high demand. Granted the surplus land could be a super deal, but my two cents are that the Foss site is the way to go…
From the standpoint of the Urban Waters project itself, I think that it is a matter of which site is more appropriate for the research they will be doing. Maybe a more industrial site would be better for researching urban waters, after all. So if this other site would be more appropriate than one on the Foss, by all means go for the surplus land.
