The first official public meeting for Historic Tacoma is just a few days away. We’ll be there. Will you? Rec’d via email:
Tacoma retains many historic buildings which reflect the city’s unique character and cultural heritage. The preservation of these structures adds to the city’s vitality and their rehabilitation has been shown to act as an economic development catalyst. As property values escalate and Tacoma continues to grow, we risk losing significant structures. By proactively advocating for, and preserving historic structures, Historic Tacoma can support the rehabilitation of deteriorated buildings and the adaptive re-use of structures which no longer meet current needs.
WHO:
You! and Historic Tacoma
WHEN:
Thursday, July 20th, 5:30-7:30pm
WHERE:
Tacoma Public Library, Olympic Room
1102 Tacoma Ave South.
You are invited to take part in the formation of a new organization, Historic Tacoma. We will be holding a public meeting to discuss the state of preservation in Tacoma and how we might sustain an effort to advocate for, educate about, and preserve the city’s architectural heritage. Your participation is essential for this effort to succeed. We need to identify community needs, successful methods, gauge the level of support, and identify potential board members, volunteers, members, and projects.

Sound like noble goals…but I’m curious too, about who this is/are. Any overlap with THS?... or is this the group that privately toured the Pythian temple recently? Maybe I’ll make it to the mtg. late and get some of my questions answered. Maybe I’m wrong, but isn’t that Bocce night? What were they thinking?!?

There’s a group of us working to get this started:—Michael Sullivan, preservation consultant, UWa-T faculty member, Pythian—Reuben McKnight, the city’s historic preservation officer—Eugenia Woo, preservation consultant and a founding member of DocoMomoWeWa-their interest: modernist architecture—Morgan Alexander, commercial broker, Tacoma historic streetcar supporter—William Osbourne, Kent city planner, chair of Central Neighborhood Council—Tim McDonald, preservation consultant—Sharon Winters, former member of the Tacoma Landmarks Preservation Commission
... I don’t think there’s a bocce player among us, but join us, diversity is an important thing

The group will only be as successful as the community around it. Currently, aside from the City’s Historic Preservation Office – which is basically one person, Reuben – there is no grass-roots conduit for people to become active participants in advocacy for historic preservation. Hopefully, that will change now with this group!
Please help spread the word!

Speaking of historic buildings, if anyone is interested in helping to save the Winthrop Hotel from becoming (staying) something it was never meant to be, please email me kris@vingrotto.com. We are trying to put a group together and fight the city from giving A.F. Evans 2.5 million dollars in city funds to keep the Winthrop as Section 8 housing. City officials claim they want Downtown Tacoma to become a vibrant and successful destination, but their actions are completely in opposition from what they claim their mission is. Please give us your voice!
