A New Hotel in Downtown Tacoma? (21. June 2006, 10:40 by Derek Young) ~ Bringing Beds to Tacoma

Here are the details as we know them:

The warehouse & parking lot to the north of the Heidelberg Brewery sold in March for $1M. The registered owners are KIM HAN & MIHYUNG of Seattle. Their address happens to be the same as a Holiday Inn Express near the Seattle Center.

A sleuthing tipster determined that Kim Han is a partner in a company called Hotel Concepts. They own and manage hotels throughout the Puget Sound and seem particularly hot on Bremerton right now. Hotel Concepts made news earlier this year by indicating their interest in purchasing the former Bremerton City Hall building to replace it with a 160-room hotel. Back in 2004 they built a $20 million waterfront hotel there – the city’s first new hotel in 20 years.

Will they do the same in Tacoma with their newly acquired property? Our tipster’s Magic 8 Ball says, "Without a doubt."

Where is the newly acquired property located in Tacoma?

The site address is 2102 South C Street.

They got a decent deal for the land, $35 per sqft in a prime location.

Lets hope we get an interesting looking hotel, maybe re-use the building (don’t recall what the current building looks like) or build something to match the neighborhood.

Please don’t give us another Courtyard by Marriot style hotel.

Horizon Partners own the southern section of that block. I wonder what they have planned?

Considering Horizon Partners has been sitting on this (http://www.ci.tacoma.wa.us/econdev/majorprojects/IP%20LuzonBuilding.htm) F O R E V E R – I wouldn’t expect much change at the tire factory… or the old warehouses across the street (Horizon owns most of that block too) which are used for parking for the 21 Commerce & Hunt-Mottet properties they also own.

Is it a coincidence that Eric “Mr. Downtown” Cederstrand is involved with Horizon Partners while he himself also has numerous buildings in various states of decay? http://badowners.com/1305_S_Fawcett.htm

I see it.

The site is by 21st and Commerce. Upcoming area. Yes, the place is obviously exploding.

Too bad they can’t transform
the “Chopstix” building on Pacific into a hotel.

Well if downtown can gain another worthwhile hotel than I’m all for it. I’d rather see one more hotel than one more condo or museum right now.

What do you mean? I think the Marriot looks very nice, and I like the way the Waddell building was incorporated.

This is Tacoma, WA. Not Suberbia,USA.
5 Story boxes belong in the burbs, along sides of the freeway, not in the city center of a major city.

The Courtyard by Marriot in Tacoma does not look like a downtown hotel. I mean come on Federal Way’s Courtyard is more downtown looking than ours.

I am all about good use of space and to me that hotel and the Rainier Pacific Building were not good uses. Tip those babies on their sides and get some height in there… now that is good use of Prime Downtown Land.

oh and I am not saying I want a high-rise as the hotel by UWT.. just something that fits the neighborhood.. A nice 5 story brick building would be nice.
