Downtown Buildings Come On The Market (26. June 2006, 12:29 by Derek Young) ~ What's Next?

Anybody looking for a building for your next big project? I received emails today on two buildings that have become available.

The first is the Mandarin Antiques building at 616 St. Helens. It’s just below the Triangle Townhomes and across the street from the Walker Apartments and the hole in the ground that will eventually become Jay Heights. It’s nearly 24,000 square feet with a reasonably impressive first floor space. At $2.9 million it isn’t for everybody, but the location is prime and it comes with a bit of parking. It would be a great location for a restaurant… Anybody?

The second building is very fresh on the market. So fresh we don’t have a price yet, but the sign supposedly went up this morning. It seems that the green building at the corner of South 21st and Commerce is for sale. The address is 2101-2109 South C Street and it currently houses Old Time Wood Work. Again, it’s about location. The rumored hotel will be across the street and other developments are showing up all the way up the hill. Once somebody finds the listing, send it my way. Who’s game?

(Thanks for the tips)

Sounds interesting.

However, the rumored hotel plans have been the most unreliable.

But one can always hope!

The Mandarin Antiques building was originally a Studebaker dealership. If I remember properly, there’s an still operational lift inside that originally moved cars between floors—perhaps it could be retrofitted into a moving bar…

The Wagner Motors, Inc. Building is what I’ve found. Originally a Studebaker dealership. Later a Packard dealership. The sales flyer talks of a restored cargo elevator. If it’s big enough to move cars, it sounds pretty sweet.

Of course at $2.9 million plus build out costs, I’m not sure how many restaurants could make the numbers pencil out for this space. We can dream…

If you stand at the south end of the building and look up, I think there are the ghost letters for Studebaker, ever so faint.

Considering this area was a “dead man” zone just a year ago, it’s nice to see some interest in the area.

The view property is all being picked up.

By the way, today I see that the signs on the Mecca theater have been removed. End of an era.

I wonder how many gallons of bleach they are going to have to use to clean the place out? The first step is going to have to be removing all of those stalls inside the building.

(No, I have only read about them with no personal knowledge)
