Heidelberg Brewery Hotel Rumors Confirmed (29. June 2006, 16:06 by Derek) ~ Look At That...

The Business Examiner has published a bit more information on the hotel rumor we talked about last week. From the BE Daily:

Seattle-based hotel developer Hotel Concepts Inc. has purchased the northern warehouse and parking lot at the former Heidelberg Brewery near University of Washington Tacoma. Intentions are to turn the former brewery and current home of Old Time Wood Work into a major franchise hotel, says Hotel Concept’s partner Han Kim. Kim’s plans for the hotel hinge on development possibilities for the other half of the building, which was recently sold to unrelated developer. Potential franchise partners include: Intercontinental Hotels Group, which operates Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express hotels; Hilton Hotels, which operates Hilton Hotels and Hampton Inns, among others; and Marriott Hotels.

It looks like we may be getting a new hotel in town.

The Intercontinental Tacoma sounds good but I suspect that the Holiday Inn Express Tacoma is more likely based on Mr. Kim’s remarks. Either would be an improvement though. I wonder if Marriott is sufficiently happy with the rates and occupancy they have been getting at the Courtyard to double down with another of their brands like Residence Inn. When I stay in Tacoma it is costing me more per night than staying at a full service hotel in downtown Portland and that to me says that the market is definitely there for something more than the 3 star hotel that Hotel Concepts is considering. Rates at the Courtyard since mid May have consistently been $199 and up and even during january they were getting $149.

Considering the Sheraton paid off their loan to the City early (by years) and the Marriott owners have been hot for another property to do a boutique style hotel, I would say there is a market for another hotel.
