Kaiser Smokestack Demolition Photos ( 2. July 2006, 10:48 by Derek Young) ~ All of Tacoma's Bloggers in One Place

We stumbled out of bed this morning and headed down to the Port of Tacoma to watch a few explosives go boom. More specifically, we drove to the designated viewing area for the demolition of the 500 foot tall smokestack on the old Kaiser Aluminum property. It was quite a show. A stage was set up with the ceremonial symbolic button set on a table in the middle. The emcee was working the crowd. The crowd was all giddy with their digital cameras ready to go. In the end we were not disappointed. At exactly 8:00, the explosive went pop, the smokestack turned toward the ground, and, seconds later, the bricks hit the ground and with a thud that shook us to our cores. That was fun.

That is a cool sequence! Reminds me of a classic zoopraxiscope experiment.

Thanks for the photos. Very interesting. This actually made national news as I just saw it on our 11:30 pm news over in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Seeing this large tower go down is kindof sad. It seems that there could have been a lot of cool things to do with a structure this big. How about a web cam on top? I guess it would just be too expensive to maintain such a big tower….and if it wasn’t maintained it would eventually become unsafe as it could fall.

Oh well….explosions are fun too as long as noone gets hurt…

Thanks again!
