General : What Do You Know?
This isn’t so much about Tacoma as it is about our place in the greater surroundings and environment. We, personally, feel like we’re becoming more and more socially conscience with an eye toward our surroundings. We compost our food scraps, sort our recycling, commute via bicycle, let our lawn go brown in the summer, and participate in a farmshare. Then again, we don’t always know what we’re helping. We’re just helping some collective good. We recently came across a 30 question quiz (plus 5 bonus questions) meant to test our knowledge of our immediate areas (via Kottke.org). This goes beyond the Tacoma specific Beautiful Angle Quiz – looking not at our manmade and cultural artifacts, but toward our natural environment. For example:
7) How far do you have to travel before you reach a different watershed? Can you draw the boundaries of yours?
10) Name five native edible plants in your neighborhood and the season(s) they are available.
17) Right here, how deep do you have to drill before you reach water?
I grabbed a scrap of paper and took the quiz. I looked up the answers to the few questions I thought I stood half a chance at getting right. It wasn’t pretty. It was humbling. If you have a bit of spare time, take the quiz and get back with us. How well do you do?

Humbling is right. Aside from a few softball questions, I ran into trouble in a hurry.
Instead of just comparing scores, why not work together as a group to answer the questions for the Tacoma neighborhoods with Exit133 readers? It would be interesting to see how the answers vary by neighborhood.
For extra-extra credit, overlay the watershed awareness answers with lahar, earthquake fault, and Asarco fall-out maps.

I took the Beautiful Angle quiz and was curious about the first question, which asks about movies filmed in Tacoma besides “Ten Things…” So I thought a good experiment would be to try the Tacoma Pierce County Buildings Index (http://search.tpl.lib.wa.us/buildings/) hosted by the Tacoma Public Library, where you can search for information on historic buildings. I typed “film” in the keyword field looking for addresses that were film locations, and this is what I got:
The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1991)
808 N Yakima
I Love You To Death (1990)
565 Broadway
755 St Helens
2102 S Tacoma Way
Ten Things I Hate About You (1999)
1121 Broadway
1132 Broadway
424 N C Street
2715 N Junette
Hands and Fists (1925)
776 Commerce
An Officer and a Gentleman (1981)
801 Portland Avenue
Note this list only includes standing buildings, feature length films, and I only got hits if the word “film” was in a newspaper headline. But fun anyway. You can search for about anything in the keyword field.
