A regular contributor to Exit133 was in the Lincoln District getting food from the ever popular Vien Dong, when he saw something interesting. The circa 1923 Frisbee’s Bakery building in the 700 block of South 38th Street has a sign in the window declaring “B&G Gardening Center – Coming Soon”. While I’ve always been partial to a good bakery, the building has been empty for a while now. The garden shop should be a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Anybody know any details?

It is nice to see the building being used again. Frsbees Bakery was famous around town. Weren’t they known for having the best wedding cakes ever?
I still hear people every now and then mention Frissbees.

Maybe famous, but at least by the end their baked goods were terrible, in my opinion. And I really wanted to like them (and I’m no bakery snob, either). One of the things that you’ve seen in the past decade with certain “institutions” going by the wayside is that they lasted only as long as they did because there was no competition or simple generational inertia. Bimbos, Frisbee, Coast Hardware (don’t get me wrong, I loved that place and we’ve got their handmade plumbing cabinet in our dining room). I’d go on to list those “institutions” that should still go, but I’d raise hackles and Derek would ban me for taking us off topic!
