The News Tribune reported today on the opening of Fire and Water Sundries Organic Bath and Body Shop at 711 St. Helens in the “Stadium District” (Welcome). We talk repeatedly about neighborhood identity on Exit133. It’s challenging with the overlap and interweaving of neighborhood councils, historic neighborhoods, and business districts. But when was the 700 block of St. Helens part of Stadium? I’d call it downtown by a long shot. At least the Fire and Water website says that they’re in the Historic Theater District of Downtown Tacoma. They know where they are. We expect this from the Seattle press, but it’s a surprise when we see it in the local press.

I’ve seen that location listed as the Staduim District, Theater District and as the St. Helen’s District. I think back in the day we would have called it the Staduim District, today we’d call it the Theater District and in the future as more stuff gets built we’ll call it the St. Helen’s District.
I concur.

I’d definitely refer to it as downtown Tacoma or the Theater District. It’s always been my favorite part of downtown, and I haven’t seen it called anything else.
After a quick check on Google Maps, Stadium District Apartment Owners’ Association is south of the 700 block of St. Helen’s… hmmm. But Stadium HS is much further north.
Downtown.

That location barely falls outside of the Old City Hall Historic District. Ummm. Almost by definition, city halls are the keystones of downtowns. If City Hall moves to Lower Pacific, though…
