Tacoma’s first 3-D building to appear in Google Earth is the Luzon Building at 13th and Pacific. The circa 1890 building, on the various historic registers including the National Historic Register, is still waiting for its day to shine again. This building, in all its gritty glory, is there for you to see, pan, tilt, zoom, and investigate. The detail is quite amazing. Hanging over the building is a “unique poster from the Public Recovery Archive”. All in all, I’m very impressed. (Nice job, Ixora)

Instructions (aka Geek Details): To view the Luzon Building, you’ll need to have Google Earth 4 loaded on your computer. Release 4 is the current beta version. Once ready, click on the Luzon Building Download Link. Then click on the “View in Google Earth 4 button. At that point you should zoom down from space and land in Tacoma. Zoom in and around to see the building and read the poster.

Wow, I didn’t know they now allow texturing of the buildings in Google Earth. What a fun/useful tool!

Wow.
Nice technology, yet the image is a bit depressing as the building is located in the heart of downtown near the freeway entrance right on Pacific Ave.

According to Pierce County Assessor-Treasurer the owner of this property is:
HORIZON PARTNERS INC
201 3RD ST STE 1
OAKLAND CA 94607-4352
and it is valued at only:
$192,100
Strange, but I bet the taxes are pretty low for owning a dilapidated historical site right in the center of downtown.

Erik,
$192,000 is only the County’s Assessment. Does not mean you can buy it for that. Unfortunately for the Luzon.

Word has it that engineers have been in there recently… change may be afoot!

It would be great to have more historic Tacoma buildings done in 3D. It looks like savvy folks can do it on their own using Google Sketchup, just like the Luzon.
