Upcoming City Council Highlights for August 1st (28. July 2006, 14:24 by Derek Young) ~ Biking, Walking, and History

The next Tacoma City Council meeting is August 1st and a couple of items caught our eye:

Resolution No. 36923

Designating the Historic City Water Ditch Trail Project as a special project of limited duration; directing the City manager to develop a scope of work for the project, including a budget and schedule; elevating the project’s priority status in the Six-Year Comprehensive Transportation Program; finalizing the purchase of the surplus Flume Line property for the project; and communicating the City’s intent to complete within the shortest timeline as feasible and reasonable.

The Water Ditch project has been described as Tacoma’s Burke-Gilman trail. This would be good to see. Link to a story from last year in The News Tribune.

Resolution No. 36927

Designating the following properties as historic landmarks and placing them on the Tacoma Register of Historic Places:

  • Washington Elementary School, 3701 North 26th Street;
  • Lincoln High School, 701 South 37th Street; and
  • National Bank of Tacoma, 1123 Pacific

This is very timely as Washington Elementary is on the proposed closure list. Link to the school closure page at The News Tribune.

It’s great that Washington moved forward so quickly, thanks to the volunteer efforts of an architect who lives in the area. McKinley Elementary, also on the chopping block, has no such designation as of yet, though it is by the same architect and of similar historic importance. Without landmark status McKinley could easily be sold and demolished. Perhaps this is something Historic Tacoma can spearhead? Indeed, much of the background work on Washington could be recycled into a McKinley application. There are folks willing to work on it on the Eastside, but they need help.

Thanks Patrick- I have been emailing with Jeff Ryan (Washington nomination) about doing other schools. He suggested a “theme nomination” to bundle similar schools into a single nomination. I am excited by this idea and would love to team up with others on this. If there is anyone interested in this, Please contact me directly at info@historictacoma.net

Thanks!

Morgan:

That’s brilliant, and thanks to you and Jeff for getting on top of this. I know that Michael Sullivan at Artifacts can be a great help as well and has offered his support. I’ll send you an email direct with other contacts.

Don’t forget Rogers Elem. Since that school is for sale it probaly has one of the highest risks of being torn down.
