A proposal has been submitted to rezone part of the H & B Fuel site on Portland Avenue to a “Transitional District” to allow for the building of 49 single family detached homes. If you’ve been on Portland Avenue at all, you’d recognize this piece of land as the one with piles of dirt, topsoil, and bark on the west side of the road between East 46th and 48th Streets. Homes would be a change. A public hearing is scheduled for November 2nd. (Thanks for the tip)

Update: H & B Fuel and Topsoil will remain in business on the remaining portion of the property.

I hope there will be some retail or other economic development to cover the loss of jobs on the Eastside. I know it is not many jobs, but I always found the employees to be good people concerned about local issues.

H&B Fuel sponsored my T-Ball team when I was a little kid! Just thought I would share :)
Also that creek (Swan?) that runs next to the property floods when we have heavy rains. I hope they are taking that into consideration.

My mom lives on 48th, just a few blocks up the road from H and B. Jakes so right, the flooding gets bad some years. It has been better the past few years though. My thought is that 49 is a LOT of homes in that area.
On the sentimental side, the jobs are of the few left from longstanding “mom and pop” businesses. And, as strange as it may sound, I have great memories of my nephews and niece plugging their noses and squealing “stinky dirt, stinky dirt.” Ah, memories. :-)

I’ve known the previous H & B owners, Jerry and Connie Walters for many years – Jerry went to Stadium with my wife (class of ‘66) Not certain, but suspect another case of property taxes effecting the business equation…..
