The Tour of Urban Living is just around the corner and this year’s schedule now includes a bit of community building. A Block Tie Affair is a special event just for residents of downtown Tacoma. The party, complete with ‘festive food’ and entertainment is being produced by the downtown developers, the City of Tacoma, and sponsors and will be at the Tacoma Club on October 12th. Maybe you’ve put money down on a place, but it isn’t quite finished yet. Well, you’re invited too. In addition, just to sweeten the experience even more, downtown residents will be receiving a special ‘passport’ for deep discounted savings throughout downtown during the Tour. The hope is to bring residents together to start building community.
For those of you that haven’t found your dream downtown condo yet, there’s still hope and the Tour should provide you with some opportunities. This year’s tour of Urban Living is October 14th and 15th.

What are the official boundaries of downtown? This sounds pretty cool, but it also sounds like it could be an exclusive event… I suspect I cannot claim to live in both Hilltop and Downtown.. and if I live on the line.. does that mean I cannot claim to live in either?

Looks like buyers and owners at City Steps, McCarver Village, Tahoma Townhomes, Gas Lamp Terrace, Nineteen02, and 1919 won’t be invited because according to some we live in Hilltop and not Downtown… No Fun!

Hmmm,
CitySteps and McCarver were in last year’s Tour. Think of it this way: it could be a good thing because Tacoma’s becoming diverse enough that different neighborhoods are being recognized for their different attitudes and feels. Downtown is characterized by mid-rise condos, yet the Hill has its own vibe with the rowhouses and townhomes. Maybe one of these days there will be new Tour of Urban Living that covers just those properties that are on the Hill.

If you are interested in this event, please email me. (stacy@visiontacoma.com)It’s hardly exclusive, it’s an effort to drum up “Abassadors” of Dowtown Living and encourage feet on the streets during the Tour of Urban Living. The city considers the Western boundary of Downtown to be Yakima Ave. per the “City of Destiny – Destination Downtown Map”. Owners and Developers actively involved in creating a new Downtown have urged that boundary West to “I” Street.
Perhaps one of these days, we’ll define and name the Downtown…any thoughts?

I live on the uphill side of Yakima… and while I don’t feel like I live downtown, the hospital looming just a little further up the hill makes me feel it could be argued either way.

And what makes it feel like it isn’t Downtown? Probaly the single family houses in the area and lack of retail. That has all been changing with all of the multi-family development. It will continue to change. What if the city sells off their lots on 21st and a large mixed-use development is built, then getting rid of the dead zone between UWT and the development in the Yakima Ave. area. So you can look at zoning and call the area downtown now because of what we all know is coming or you can wait until it is actually built up fully and then call it downtown.
Either way developers will still market it as downtown and condo owners will for the most part say they live downtown.
