The Commencement In Trouble? (22. August 2006, 18:48 by Derek Young) ~ Not Moving Beyond Dirt

I go hiking on a mountain today, and look at the news when I get back home… The News Tribune is reporting that The Commencement is in trouble. The project had the distinction of having some of the most expensive condos in the area with several over $1 million. Of course, that would require the condos to be built. So, according to the story, the company behind the project is set to default on a portion of its contract with the City of Ruston. We’ll see…

I’ve been leery of that one all along. Slow down, or ride a bike through the tunnel beneath the old smelter and you’ll still see bright green (copper sulfate?) flowing out into the gutters. A great view for sure but not a healthy place to live.

Instead of trying to build condos on the land, why not put in a public use that would attract residents to the site. Like a new home for the Rainiers. A new stadium on Commencement Bay? Light rail connecting it to downtown? What could be better?

We need to be careful here in that we appear to be mixing up a couple different projects. Point Ruston LLC was recently approved for the Asarco property – all 67 acres of it. This is a separate piece of land from the couple of acres purchased by Ruston Landing Group for The Commencement. The Point Ruston project is still moving its way through the system the last time I checked.

Thank you for the clarification, Derek.

The fact that Point Ruston plans to include 65 percent open space with a ginormous park, and the extending of Ruston Way in a loop around the 67 acres should also be noted.

In my humble opinion, that will be an amazing community asset.
